Sacre bleu merde. What’s worse is that it’s a Yamaha collaboration and its pig f**king ugliness is highlighted by the beauty in blue. Who does that then steps back and says yep that’s exactly what I envisioned. I’ve seen better looking play mobile bikes.

Its like a very expensive carbon version of those rattle can matt black cut down 70s rat bikes you used to see in the 90s. Usually ridden in all weathers by real bikers with no cash and a bad attitude. They were good lads who did what they did for a reason, unlike this tosh.
I guess Yam's part in this 'colab' (im so down with kids lol) was to supply the new bike and a deadline, and then sit back and wait. They probably only caught sight of the finished article the first time as it wheeled into the show as the builders were probably up all night finishing it off.
...And old yam managers know while theyy might not like it, these builders are the ones your customers look up to.. thats why you do these colabs. Yam gets to see what the cool kids can do with the modern bike...
In this case its a shitshow. But you cant win em all... yet maybe this is what the customers want from a new model for 2027? 2000's carbon and faux cafe racers all round please...
hmm... maybe Yam wants me to do a colab? Since no one wants anything 'new' these days, I could retro something up with a 90's reboot with garish dayglo colours... hmm, white wheels... hmm, perhaps a bit of the weird GSXR style rear end... (lets hope yam dont notice its not yam... hmm... perhaps a full fairing with lot of purple in it as well... yeah boi!
FWIW The mention of the Velocity Moto 500 as being a good thing in the same article gives you the level of where this article is aimed. IMHO if so many people want to restyle the XSRs like the older bikes and there is a ready market for adding weight with ropey GRP additions that look gawky, then Yam will start to do something like this themselves. It also proves that buyers perceive the XSR as an ugly bike, certainly the older buyers who will pay top money to make it look (mildly) like something else if they squint a bit after a few beers. Time to restyle...

Well you all asked for it in my opinion, I believe the quotes were (amongst others) ''... modern bikes leave me cold...all look the same'' etc etc

Stylistically they are reaching out to a bygone era that actually didn’t exist. Think 1930’s art noveau crossed with there interpretation of of the cafe racer culture. However very few bikes of the 30’s followed that design look and the cafe racers of the day followed the look of race bikes and were built not only to look like Manx nortons etc but were improvements of the real bikes. These modern interpretations can be done well look at pepo XTR/radical Ducati etc. the bike above is imo similar to the philippe starck Aprilia done for the sake of it not for any functional reason. They may be good designers (although not imo) but letting lose someone on a motorcycle who doesn’t understand bikes is the result. Modern bikes ‘styling’ imo is led too far by computer and concentrates on what design parameters that dictates. This leads to a level of uniformity that fails to display any individuality again imo. Yes for some of us our age dictates what we like, but where is the flair? These bikes aren’t unique whether modern interpretations or modern main stream they are built to ‘concepts’ The performance parameters also dictate the style to a degree, realistically who thinks that this years ‘whatever’ needed the improvement to increase the performance by 1 or 2 %? Is there anyone on this site who can get the most of the performance out of a modern bike? I’ve ridden my mates H2 and another mates 765, out of the two the 765 is all the performance you need in the modern world light ish 130bhp etc the H2 is totally overkill. Some will need the latest and greatest for pub bragging for real world use they are irrelevant I’m afraid I don’t get it. As I’ve said I get far more enjoyment ragging my Lc than any modern bike but then I’m old enough and comfortable enough in my own skin to not need 200 hp and every time I look at my Lc I’m proud of what I built and smile at the classic simplicity of what it is. Of course I accept not everyone thinks like me and people will build stuff for there own enjoyment for the most I wouldn’t criticise someone’s interpretation but does this really appeal to anyone other than the selvedge wearing hipster who isn’t into bikes for the experience but as a fashion statement that will eventually move on to other forms of transportation? Then as a consequence are manufacturers giving these designers carte Blanche to influence design style for the future? The other alternative is I’m a curmudgeonly old t**t who believes the golden era for me is the 80’s and 90’s and I should be ignored and allowed to grow old dribbling into my beard and moaning till I draw my final breathe. Probably the latter.
