My 350 has always been a bit noisy on the clutch side. Partially due to the sloppy kickstart idler bush but also the clutch basket primary gear bush was worn out. The original is a split glacier type bush but with a perforated bronze inner. Tried sourcing one but the nearest is the correct O/D but the bore is 1mm smaller. Decided to make my own from PB1 bronze. First attempt was a little tight so I polished it in situ, so when I made a second (to go in my 250) I gave it another 0.02 clearance and it’s perfect. Heated up the primary gear with my heat gun and left the bushes in the freezer overnight. Made a little dolly and they tapped in lovely. Kickstart idler gear is far simpler, an off the shelf bush is available so I’ve ordered some, with a bit of luck they’ll be here be weekend so I can put it back together. You can see the fretting on the original bush. I saw that someone was making these but there’s some satisfaction in fixing it yourself. Just need to wait for my birthday now for a new basket as the fingers on mine are somewhat groovy…..

Hi Bill if you don't mind spilling the beans what was the final clearance between shaft and bush?

Hi Bill if you don't mind spilling the beans what was the final clearance between shaft and bush? I used the old school theory of 0.001” / inch on diameter which roughly equated to +0.030 / 0.035mm between the sleeve and the bush when fitted.

Hi Bill, Would you be OK to share the kickstart idler gear bush reference number? I'm sure many on here would be interested to install a new one.

I’m fortunate enough to have bought an OEM style bush a few years back to use on my next basket swap. Rob beat me to it with the MBD one. They do seem expensive, but at least they are available.

I get the fact we should be grateful but at the end of the day if you know where to look a new gear isn't much more

I do a custom bush service for the clutches, make a new bush to fit you gear and bearing sleeve, takes out all of the wear
Not too far aay I'll be offering the option to rerplace the bush etc with needle rollers, will involve a new kick starter gear, needle rollers and a new bearing sleeve, not sure on price yet, but that will remove the need to ever worry about it again and reduce the friction quite considerably

Personally i still think the bush is a better solution.
I say that but i do have one clutch using roller bearings and one first gear running on roller bearings.

Well, they arrived, the 4lb lump hammer was found and an idler gear became the home for a lovely new glacier bush.
Before and after in the video link below. Is it better? Not sure..... Maybe a bit?
Will find out when it's running.

Even new gen Yam gears are wobbly
The idea is that it helps the kick-start gear engage

I remember when TSS (and others) sold a version of these and people complained they were loose back then. Yam could have got them 100% right and didnt, makes you wonder if that was by design as has been said.

It's a wizards sleeve for a reason
If not operating the kick-start would be a hit and miss just like trying to go up and down the gearbox with the engine running but the bike not moving (input shaft turning but output shaft not turning)

The one on my 350 got really noisy. When I stripped it down, it had been rattling around and clashing with the peined over rivets on the back of the primary gear. So the new bush was a massive improvement on mine 😊
