Its tax exempt the April after it turns 40 years old so should have been eligible for exemption April last year?
Try a different post office, i had to try a second after the first couldn't manage it.... The second managed it no bother (on the same day!)

From memory, you need to wait for the April (new tax year starts 5th.) following the 40th anniversary of registration.

I think?? you have to wait till April this year. 2024. For the free/ historic tax. But 40 years for no longer needing a mot.

I tried 3 post offices last year to get a Honda xl100 1979 as historic. I gave up in frustration as every one had a different reason why I couldn’t do it. I’ve already got 2 done so I do know the system. It’s just the staff don’t

Thought the ruling was 40 years for historical My bike was registered on March 1983 I did this just yesterday for my LC, the PO lady explained as long as the bikes details was on their system (from the DVLA) , they could make the change and tax it (0 cost) there and then, which they did. Had the bike not been on their system , then they advised I would have to contact the DVLA. Very much sounds like thats what has happened in your case.

The guidance page here: www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles#:~:text=You%20do%20not%20need%20to,the%20way%20the%20vehicle%20works currently says: If your vehicle was built before 1 January 1983, you can stop paying vehicle tax from 1 April 2023.Which implies that your March 1983 bike will become eligible for free tax in April of this year. i.e. you'll have to wait four months.

Yep
If registered after January you have to wait till the April the year after so for a March 23 it's March 24
I've got a March 23 and a May 23 and it's this year before historic
But
As the bike is actually 40 years old but not eligible for Historic you do not need an mot to tax it (although why not wait till April) you can fill in an mot exemption and pay the tax
