I received an envelope today from the AA regarding my insurance renewal for my car.
It's gone up, no surprise but what is a surprise is the amount. It's gone from £263.73 to £454.24. That's an increase of over £190. To put it another way (just another, no better) an increase of 72%.
Unless: a) my car turned from an Insignia into a Buggati Veyron without me knowing or b) inflation has jumped to over 70% also without me realising or c) they've added a huge amount of lazy tax to it.
Maybe they are trying to re-coup the cost of bringing me and the SR125 back home from Edinburgh earlier this year?
I like to think I'm as lazy as the next man but even I won't be paying that without someone putting a shotgun in my face.

They have pretty much put them all up Steve, give them a call before you go shopping around handing all your details out to new companies.

They have pretty much put them all up Steve, give them a call before you go shopping around handing all your details out to new companies. Woops, bit late. I was intending to but I went on a well known comparison site and one company was £270 so bought it. There's no way The AA would reduce it by £180. If they would then why quote £454 in the first place? A few years ago I accepted that all insurance companies are $hit. It makes choosing one a much more simple task once you accept that.

I had the same crap with my Yaris. Almost £400 a year. Then I turned 55 and tried Saga. £200.

My van insurance has gone up by £100 (earlier in December) But the 600 2008 hornet has gone down by a tenner.
For a much higher increase, buy a battery car...

They've got you all Ways I'm afraid ☹️
The wife's had gone up a fair bit this year (July renewal), tried shopping around but the £200 quid was the cheapest. It had been £150
Cancelled it last week as punted the car. New one coming January and the ar5e was falling out of the market so we can do without for a few weeks
Cnuts took £56 cancellation fee 😫

I don't know how it's come about but my car insurance, the Wife's car insurance and our home and contents insurance are all due on the 18th of this month. The house insurance has gone up 45% so I gave them a call. It went down from £455 to £409 initially then dropped again to £380 after a bit more moaning. The Wife's has only gone up £30 or so but based on my experience she's still going to ring up and have a whinge.
The youngest lad has just been for a visit and his insurance is also due. His has rocketed from £395 to £715. To save you the maths that's an increase of 81%. I'd like to hear their explanation for that one. Inflation anyone? 🤔

Bonkers. And why is your house insurance so much? Is the postcode SL4 1NJ?

Bonkers. And why is your house insurance so much? Is the postcode SL4 1NJ? Alex Is that expensive? I don't actually know. It's building and contents. The house is about 220 years old but not listed or anything daft like that. It's not near a river, just a tiny beck about 300m away. We had the garage broken into but that was in 2015 so shouldn't affect it. Is SL London I'm guessing? Just looked. Ah yes, Windsor Castle. No we're just outside Hull 😄

I’ve a view that this isn’t unusual - it’s just a bit more blatant these days, they do it to offload the less profitable business and balance their risk profile.
If they think a particular type of car / driver / location is going to cost them they up the price to get rid of you.
Caveat Emptor and shop around - online it’s much easier than tramping around the brokers like we used to in the olden days.

Unless something comes up last minute like the TT did in 2014 I can't see me going to The Manx this year. It sounds like it needs organising well in advance and my brain is fully occupied doing that for one trip . I just bought a few more regional maps of Spain. We're thinking of Segovia about 240 miles from the ferry for our first couple of nights. we're going for the riding and sights so we want to have time to enjoy the ride, stop and enjoy the scenery and food whenever we want so we may even split it into two and do it over two days.

Why my renewal drops through the letterbox, I will do the comparison sites, and then call the existing insurer, ….. sit down with a coffee and have a chat, let them talk the talk, and always remain polite and friendly…..
What you have to remember is call centre’s are like cattle markets….. push them through to maximise profit….. They have time targets, sales targets, and compliance targets…..all of which directly affect the person you are talking to….and the pressure is on them. Companies like this are the scum of the earth…. But we have to deal with them sadly….
So, to make it work both ways…… there is no point in having a tantrum first off….. you may well get disconnected and a flag out on your file….they will swear they don’t…. They do!
When you have gone through the tedious data protection, remember the person’s name…..it goes along way. Let them give you their best quote…. only then say, I have looked around for a better quote…… you will have their attention! As they have already wasted time dealing thus far….. the clock of target time is clicking down for them to resolve the call……..this adversely effects their targets, and the pressure will be increasing to complete the call……
They may go for broke and give you the bottom line quote, and there won’t be much wiggle room after that…..
If you go for the quote, they have reached a target, and you will hear the T&C’s go so fast….. you will feel overwhelmed… But hang on….. now you have the chance to explore their pain threshold…..and this is where you will get the absolute price, basically, they aren’t making money…. You may hear, I NEED TO TALK TO THE UNDERWRITERS….. then you know this is that point.
If you go ahead, that will be the sale target hit, only compliance to come and the person you are dealing with will have ticked all their boxes so as not to get a disciplinary….. yes…. That’s life in a call centre…..
It also saves the sheer hassle of going through all this c r a p with another company…..
Bear in mind, most insurers use multi franchise specialist call centres….. and you may put the phone down from one insurer…. Only to speak with the same individual representing another insurer……that’s the way of the industry….
They do have it sewn up beautifully….sorry to be a cynic!

Im not looking forward to my renewal this year my postcode is now high risk due to the gangs stealing cars by breaking into houses for keys they are averaging 15 cars a week in our postcode and thats been going on all year, a friend got 2 stolen one was written off in high speed pursuit the others keys were recovered when Mr big’s house was raided no arrests! There were 4 people sleeping in the house when it was done over nobody heard anything but the door lock was snapped off
