Looking to invest in a decent Tap and Dye set or even just a tap set, anyone got any recommendations of what's a good Buy ??
Cheers Alan

My advice, just for bike stuff, rather than for a general engineer, is to not buy a set. There will be loads you never use. Just buy the sizes you need. You can always add odd ones later. Better quality for the same outlay. I like the modern Presto stuff, for decent quality & affordability. This sort of stuff www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122758106793Not recommanding that seller, just an example. FWIW I have loads of 50 - 100 year old British sets of odd sizes & threads in lovely oak boxes, but then I have odd bikes.

www.mscdirect.co.ukHi Alan Have a look at the company above, I use them for tooling at work but have used them for personal stuff too. Be warned though, they do all sorts of stuff that you didn’t even know you needed! 😂 Andy

I purchased a fairly cheap metric set years ago and I use it for general bike stuff and small lathe work. Quality does matter but considering what I paid for the set it has lasted me years.

Agree with not buying cheap
When I was making the Kettle barrel puller plate I had a cheap USA pro m10 x 1.25 tap that I tried
Took 15 muns of piss1ng about to tap 1 hole
Bought a decent 1st and second tap. Ran them through no bother in a cordless drill

Oh,
Maybe it’s because M10 has 3 common thread pitches? I seem to remember them being finer than normal?

I would just like to add buy yourself a good cutting oil. It really makes all the difference and your taps will last longer especially when cutting titanium or stainlees metals.
I use Zettex cutting oil which comes in a spray can but my favourite is Roco, i've had a big tin of the stuff since i was an apprentice it's a bit like grease so you dab it on it works really well and stinks like hell.

... oh come on Tony, as you well know, you only need cutting paste / oil if your using your OWN taps and dies, if its the WORKS taps and dies you dont need any cutting paste at all ! Steven.

I lent out my M10 x 1.25 tap and never got it back so bought a USA pro and it was absolutely rubbish, struggled in aluminium. Funnily, a job at work needed an M10 fine the following week………..

My parents bought me a set of Presto taps and dies in a nice wooden case for maybe my 17th birthday. It even has 7 & 9mm. I have used both would you believe. The 7mm is the thread on the back of the horn. They have lasted my whole biking life so far. I have added M10 x1.25, (standard Japanese 10mm, with some exceptions)M10 X 1.0 (most hydraulics threads, all banjos as far as I am aware and one or two others) and M12x 1.25 I think. If you buy a real good set at your (probably my) age then you probably won't get full value for money out of them but you can always leave them in your will 😄

Helicoils too. Jon

Ha Ha that is mostly true, normally the customer has it onboard. There have been occasions where i have ordered the stuff and my colleagues have questioned why i have odered it. They have all been a bit on the younger side and still need to experience "being up shit creek without a paddle"

The most difficult set of taps for me to get hold of was M5 with a very fine pitch it was used for reclaiming thread on old Keihin carbs, it took about 3 months to order them through my company. I could only source them from companies that deal with trade and not joe public.
