Evening all I’ve stripped my bike to have the frame repainted but have unexpectedly found that it has some rust that needs repairing, so am looking for advice/recommendations for someone to carry out the repairs. I am on the Essex/Suffolk border but am happy to travel a reasonable distance for the right person. I was quite shocked as I thought my bike was all good, but I did build it over 15 years ago and it hasn’t been apart since so it’s not done bad I guess. I’ve attached a couple of before and after pics of bike and rust area as I know we all like pics. Thanks in advance Andy

That's not too bad, seen much worse! I'm sure any decent fabricator or even car repair works near you should be able to sort.
I had a lot worse and took to garage near me that refurbish Landrovers of all things, but they were able to sort no problem, so there must be someone near you, doesn't have to be 2-stroke specialist.

Don't let someone just stick a patch of 18 or 20 gauge mild steel over it.
It's part of the main structure, and needs to be replaced ideally.
Not what you want to hear, but there is far more rot you can't see.

Worth googling frame builders in your area I would highly recommended my guy who did my Tigcraft frame changes but unfortunately he is Wiltshire based You could try these guys in Ipswich as the are custom frame builders? www.ellobocycles.com/pages/build-me-a-chopper

From memory there is a vent hole somewhere near the carb overflow guide
When blocked it usually causes this
Personally I would dremel around the rot
I had one the same, seems like water gets in and sits at that point when it's on the side stand
I was surprised that an inch away from the hole it was full thickness

Thanks Steve, I wondered if there should be a vent hole as it would seem sensible even if there wasn’t one originally. I’ll have a look but could be possible that it was filled with the original powder costing, it was a little industrial the place I used years ago. Thanks.

Jamie - my powdercoating guy - does loads of Motocross frames. He blasts them first, which will help expose any areas of rot, then welds up and dresses back the repairs, before powdercoating. The lower rails and cross braces on any bike are often pretty manky inside, with grime and chain grease, and for a decent repair, and an easier time for the guy welding it, it's worth getting it as clean as you can
