Hello, Does anyone have a suggestion for cleaning power valves with carbon on them, without damaging them? Many thanks.

I use a small brass brush - usually come in a pack with a steel and a nylon brush - usually found in Pound shops or the like. It wont damage the steel Pv and gets the carbon off a treat

Hadn’t intended to but just forgot about them. Jon

Ultrasonic cleaning might work depending how hard the carbon deposit is, maybe combine it with a carb. cleaner solution.

Ok, great thanks. I've got an ultrasound cleaner. I'll give that a go first. Then move onto the brush and Solvo treatment.

We’d have soaked them in a jam jar full of petrol overnight back in our youth surely? 😁

Use a non caustic paint stripper, ie the ingredient should be methylene chloride then buff off with a brass wire wheel
It won't affect the aluminium, caustic, or oven cleaner will

Well, I Soaked them overnight in white spirit to remove some of the gunk. Then I gave it a go with the ultrasonic cleaner, with some result. I have some modern paint stripper at work. So I'll give that a go as well. before getting the solvo and Brass wire brushes on them.

Make sure that paint stripper DOES NOT mention the following ingredients
Sodium Hydroxide Caustic Soda Strong Alkali
If it does, do not use it or you will lose your PV's

I've often wondered if there is a chemical that removes carbon but doesn't touch aluminium. It would make for a totally labour free method of cleaning anything aluminium caked in carbon. So far I've not found anything. I've left a set of RGV power valves soaking in carb cleaner in a sealed jar for weeks. Virtually un effected, i.e. not cleaned. I can't recall If I've actually tried the ultrasonic cleaner or not. Now I have my all new one it could be time to try. One thing I would say is that anything harder than aluminium will inevitably scratch it. So anything like wire wool, steel wire brush or even a brass wire brush. Depends how hard you press how much though. Some 'brass' wire brushes are just brass coated and still steel underneath. Even if it says brass I would still check. Coating steel with brass is much cheaper than making them out of brass

Methylene Chloride will remove carbon and won't touch aluminium

Sounds like we all have different approaches. I used a kitchen scouring pad with Autosol and WD40 then buffed with a cloth. The flexibility of the pad worked well. Not highly polished, but good enough for me.

+1 for soaking in petrol for a day or two, an old fashioned suede brush works well after that bit.
