Gearing

On what bike??? it depends on your current gearing and what you run for say the short circuit at Brands. When I raced TZ Yamaha 250's I never changed the gearing between the brand's short and long circuits as the straight\s on the GP circuit were not long enough to pose any problem. For the old pre-300 Snetterton circuit I did change gearing by knocking a tooth of the back sprocket, if you know the circuit the straight was a lot longer than it is now.
If you are revving out on the back straight at Brands that leads to the first right-hander on the long circuit then, maybe, consider changing the ratio, but I never found much difference. Bear in mind that this was the 1980's and the circuit has changed a bit.
Sheer speed down the straights may not provide the correct feel or gearing for the corners. Maybe listen to (and watch) some bikes riding the long circuit and see what they are doing, Are they revving it a bit flatter in a certain gear to get into a corner and out with good drive, which could\should happen or are they overgeared and not pulling the bike correctly.
I found the straight that runs into clearways needs to be taken at the right time in the right gear to get down the front straight as the lead-in from the long circuit is a lot faster. You may have to make gearing sacrifices that work mostly overall but may not be perfect for every corner.
This might be vague but you should know the feel of your bike and the drive it gives in each corner.

Thanks. Forgot to say. 350lc production tune. Always had to change the gearing at all 3 circuits. But that waslong ago. It's overgeared on what i believe is standard set up on the short circuit, so I was hoping for a bit of guidance, as once I'm there I won't change it. Cheers

I'm pretty sure I went 2 teeth bigger on the rear for Brands when I was racing.

Thanks. Forgot to say. 350lc production tune. Always had to change the gearing at all 3 circuits. But that waslong ago. It's overgeared on what i believe is standard set up on the short circuit, so I was hoping for a bit of guidance, as once I'm there I won't change it. Cheers I used to do a bit of long distance production racing on a 250LC in the 1980's and the bike was not highly tuned to keep it reliable. On that bike I just went up one tooth on the front sprocket and kept it like that all the time. Fundamentally though it was just the same airfield circuit that I used to ride on and the only changes in the "track" were by using straw bakes etc to change corners etc. A lot depends on your choice of sprockets available, if you have a decent selection it's worth experimenting if you have time between sessions. I doubt that overall there should be that bigger difference between the gearing for the two circuits, although the back part of the long circuit is a bit faster.

Down a tooth on the front, surely?
