I’m sorry to ask a question that’s probably been asked a million times before but can anyone offer some advice please . I have recently bought another rd250 LC After 20 years it is a totally standard bike running on super unleaded . Starts and rides well but around 5000rpm to 6500 rpm it stutters and holds back. from 6500 it flies round to 1100 + with ease just one thing that I was thinking it has only done 600 miles in 16 years can the reed valves perish? Lastly I’ve owned my own car repair business for 40 years but know absolutely zero about 2 stroke diagnostics and tuning many thanks in advance for any advice given thanks gavin

I’d probably pull the carbs and give them a good clean, check to make sure they are set up correctly, worth removing the brass balls as well they can clog up behind them. If it’s been stood for a while then your crank seals might be a bit iffy - that’s not a 5 minute job though.

is this the same as the usual flat spot at those revs which can be reduced with some fettling, but how are you riding it, buzzing through the gears or winding it on in top gear like a big four stroke..? where are you located, there may be someone close by who can offer a 2nd opinion

You gotta dance on that the gear lever, don't try and use too tall a gear.
Stutter is generally a rich point in the fuelling, you could try dropping the needle one notch, to see if it helps.
But as suggested, make sure the carbs are crystal clear, all airways. Then you can start altering the jetting.

I started mine up a little while ago and it had been standing for 6 years, but I did drain the carbs. It ran really badly and it was hard to even get above 6,000 rpm. As others have suggested check the carbs. one of my carbs. had some corrosion in the float bowl and clearly it must have been blocking the jets partially. After a good clean of both carbs. It was fine and has been good ever since.
That would be the first place to start I would say and maybe check and clean the plugs and see what they are like.
