I need to replace a weeping seal on my hybrid, my forks are RGV250 but not the VJ22, they are VJ23, i unscrewed the cap and they are not like the ones on the Youtube video. Anybody done these and can advise please?
Thanks, Phil

There is a strip down of Rgv usd forks in my 400 hybrid thread. Can't link as I'm out at the mo. Quite easy to do

Oops just saw yours are Vj23. Don't know how they differ ? It seems the tops don't unscrew like the VJ22 ones.

Hi Dusty, I just found that, looks like they maybe similar, it seems I have to pull the tube down enough to get to that nut, did your have the little pins under the top main nut? thats what may be different. IMG_1668 by Philip Millard, on Flickr

Mine are vj22 and I did mine by loosening the bottom bolt through the axle area. You can put em back together that way to ,just make sure the cup washer on the end of the rods stays on. You then can just push fork up on a garage roof beam or something then tighten bolt back on . Unscrew top and put oil in

Hi Phil, I dont remember the pins on the Vj22 - I imagine they are a different way of pre tensioning the spring maybe ? And yea, you have to get that outer tube retracted a bit to allow room for a spanner on the locknut. I did manage it myself with the aid of a bench vice, but a second pair of hands would make life a lot easier for you. Have a look on Fowlers website - you can cross reference the parts diagram between the Vj22 and Vj23 forks to see if there are any parts differences, but I'm guessing disassembly for fork seals will probably be more or less the same

Yes pins on both my sets of VJ22, i think they stop the lower part turning independently when you adjust the tops.
As Dusty says, slip the top down and then undo. Thats how i remember it.

Ok, so I'll try and get them apart today, one question for those that have done it, is the whole thing going to fly apart when the top nut comes off? the video on Youtube show the inner rod being long enough to come off without there being any compression on the spring. Every other fork I have stopped has pressure on the fork top nut from the spring.
Thanks again, Phil

They are apart.... as you all said, not too difficult, I ended up taking the main bolt out of the bottom, could not get the upper part compressed enough on my own! Now wait for the seals etc to arrive from Robinsons.

If you put them back together the same way then the cupped washer that fits on the bottom of the rods needs to stay on !
Just slightly distort the side and it will hold itself on. You only need to compress the leg about 1 inch at the most and you can get the threads started. I was shown this way years ago and no special tools needed, maybe a seal driver but you don't need that as some plumbing plastic tube will do.

I bought the Suzuki seal driver tool... and also the one to seat the seperate 'leg ends' on the version that has those... they were good value when i found them, probably worth a fortune today lol.
As Martin says, you dont need em really... but they are some of the few genuine workshop tools i own lol
