I have a completely rebuilt 250LC that I SORNED a few years back. It is still currently insured but is off the road now and i want to register it as an "historic" vehicle as it's now over 40 years old, now tax and MOT exempt.
I checked the DVLA site and this seems to be clear enough if you have a currently taxed and MOT'd bike, however, does anyone know what the procedure is if you have a bike currently on SORN, but now want to register it for exemption from tax and MOT and get it back on the road again.
All replies appreciated.

Welcome. Personally i would mot it which should be an easy pass as its just been rebuilt and then i would tax it on a direct debit which i would cancel as soon as it comes back as historic. Others may know different but that looks like a way with the least hassle. Its only going to cost you the price of an mot which you will never have to do again and a few quid in tax.

Decent Post Office , present Form V112 MOT exemption, apply for tax ,stump up any payment they want, it will be refunded in due course if applicable.
Worked for me.

As above
Take v5 to the post office with the change in class section filled out
Download, print and fill out a v112 (mot excemption)
Pay the £0 😁 for the road tax and the lady behind the counter (or fella) will send the v5 to dvla to change
Just remember for historic/tax free it will need to be the April after it is 40 so just now that's before April 1982
If its not old enough yet you can tax it with just the v112 and the tax payment but will be another year before historic and tax free
Also remember you still need to tax it every year. You will get a reminder as usual so you have to go online and pay £0 to tax it again

I spoke to DVLA yesterday who confirmed the above. Take V5 to Post Office and complete V112, it seems that simple. The bike is now 41 years old so there will be no problem with getting it registered as an historic vehicle.
Thanks to all for confirming the information.

If you take it to a post office that know what they are doing, you wont even need any forms, just your V5 and they do it on line for you, give you a receipt for £0 to say its taxed and they send your V5 off for you. I did my second one a couple of months back, my other the year before. They just need to know what they are doing (the first one I went to didn’t but the one half a mile down the road did it in 2 minutes………………………..) If........ you are in Bolton i can even tell you which

Thats a suburb of the mighty Bury I actually went to school in Bolton, got my first job and bought my first house there.Fond memories really.

Useful to know what you need from the counter staff, when re taxing mine at ZERO, the counter person looked very puzzled at the paperwork and the computer threw up no MOT in force etc, I explained it’s due to the vehicle being classed as Historic, they went to a supervisor who guided them through the process…. The comment added, we are seeing quite a few of these applications now, learning curve for you.

Thanks to the comments above I had a very easy time registering my bike as historic. I took in a completed V112 and they just checked it and gave it back. They taxed my bike despite it being on SORN and gave me a receipt for £0.
Just awaiting the return of V5. A check online now shows the bike as being taxed from 01/07/23 for one year.
Thanks to all for the information.

Just done another one of mine, but was slightly apprehensive as my old local sub post office was shut down and they were always superb… Fortunately the next nearest main office was equally straightforward and just bish, bash, bosh! Job done One thing I noticed was that on the receipt it says retained documents- V5… so aside from free postage there’s no doubt whose responsible for the documents!

Can you register one as historic if it's still on sorn, and has not, and will not be insured either, Ie, a 'resto' or a 'garage queen' got a couple that haven't been used for years, but are on the DVLA database.

Yes but no but ! you could check at a post office but probably not at as part of the ‘taxing’ process. However change from ‘bicycle’ to ‘Historic’ on the V5 is just another ‘details change’ same as colour, address etc. You’d probably have to send the v5 to Swansea. Aside from the postage in don’t think there would be a charge.

Mine was on SORN but it was insured and I had no problems taxing the bike. I am guessing if you just want to register the bike as historic you present your V112 and V5 and let the post office send it off and tell them you don't want to tax it.
I was asked if I wanted to tax mine and as it was insured I said "yes" I think he even asked If I wanted six months tax, assuming that capacity has a 6 months tax charge. I just stated a year and all was sorted.
I got my new V5 back in about 3 weeks.
