Looks like it's been welded up and bodged before. A right cowboy build!👍 Here, he's finally got the cases apart and the crank out......... horrific!🤬 photos.app.goo.gl/beTbk8X3YVhi3hyJ7feck me, that's shocking, even the welds look dodgy let alone the big end pin letting go !

How the feck can a crank pin snap They aren't even hollow 🤯 Steve Welding will make it brittle, but it would still take some doing to snap the pin.

My H1e started making a different noise that I wasn’t happy with many years ago. So I split the cases and all looked fine until I grabbed the crank from each end and it came out in 2 halves. The centre pin had snapped. So it does happen 🤷♂️

I should imagine the crank pin was made of dubious material and or the poor weld changed the metallurgy, so if the assembly had bad vibration a sheer crack began to develop at pin/crank wheel face. At some point it just let go and then the mating surfaces would have been pulverised as the LH barrel probably ran on for a number of cycles … TBH… It’s fortunate that the cases and barrel didn’t get completely lunched ! As for keyboard mechanics and a general complete lack of any skills and understanding within the wider 2T ownership …. It’s true Bedlam…

When Terry Shepherd re did my LC crank in the late 80`s the welds where tiny little neat tig welds, so I was puzzled when reading some people reckoned welding cranks was bad. Looking at those welds I can see why.

In reality with such a shit crank and where it broke he is actually lucky
It could have trashed the cases or block
Yes it would have run on a bit but due to it slapping around and having the timing on that side it would soon stop
Breaking on the other side it would still run on or be carried by the transmission

Fark
That is not good, not seen anything like that in a long time
V16 Cat with 3 holes punched in the block, they were plugged with 3 bits of crank and very unwell conrods poking out
I'd agree the metallurgy has changed with the heat of welding, that has literally snapped not twisted from what I can see

I've used one in my "spokey" build and I also have one on the shelf
Mutts supplies them so can't be that bad 🤣

Gotta agree. Oh.......and he's been running it on a pre-mix ratio of 120:1.😵💫 28:1 is supposedly the perfect premix for 70's and 80's two strokes but for ease of numbers, I generally go with 150ml of oil/5 litres of petrol which is about 33:1 and always worked well.

Let's be clear here; there can never be a perfect ratio for premix.
