Just went to send a friends and family transaction and paypal gave me a message that my credit card would treat this as a cash advance and charge accordingly. This is a new message and I wondered if this is a new thing in the UK where they pass info about the type of transaction to the card issuer now? I guess it was a loop hole and theyve plugged it, but it was a useful one for paying for stuff in the uk for me from abroad cos of conversion rates and settling up in one go rather than multiples. Has anyone been charged a fee on their credit card for F&F tx yet?

I used f&f paypal last week Jon.... No such message, but my Paypal account is funded from a debit card, not a credit card.... Maybe thats what you need to change 👍

Same as above , so maybe the credit card source is the issue.

As others I've not had any issues but haven't done an F&F from a credit card for a while
Got a bank account linked so usually use that unless it's too near payday lol
With cash advance rates and charges it would be cheaper to pay as goods and add the 3.5% 🙄

Can you transfer funds to your PayPal account then send from PayPal balance?

Ahh ok, I dont think I explained it very well. I knew it was the credit card that was why I was getting the message as its about cash advances etc.
The point was that this is a new message as of about a month or so, before that I used it like this with no message and, more importantly, no extra charges.
I was wondering if anyone had seen this come up as something the uk banking system was doing with paypal now, ie PP was passing on the 'type of tx' to the card issuer and not just sending it through as a normal 'payment'.
I do have other methods to pay, I was just trying to see what people knew about this scenario as its a new message on PP when using a card for F&F payments... which i 'get' are really cash advances, so I guess people used them as a loop hole to pay themselves and the UK banking system has plugged the loop hole.
Anyway, no worries, just dont have that much sight of changes to the UK banking stuff from here is all. The BBC news only gets me so far lol

Steve This is exactly why I was asking... and its a way round it I'd also considered as well.

Its your credit card company Jon. I had the same last month. Sent £20 F&F and saw the message saying you may be charged by your CC company (Tesco bank). I then noticed i was charged 0.80p for a cash advance on my CC statement. I called my CC company its not cash its pay pal F&F and they said we see it as a cash advance. I then also paid 18p in interest on the £20 also from the date of sending until my monthly statement date. Robbing Ba--ards. I now send as goods and just add 3.5% as that way your doubly protected by pay pal and your CC.

PayPal is a very expensive way to transact, especially when going between currencies, their exchange markup is very high.
Cash advances on credit card, as noted are also very expensive.
Possible solution: I use Monzo abroad a lot, they use close to the bank spot rate to convert between currencies. You can send and receive money between other users for free.
I believe the other cards in this sector - Revolute and the like do the same sort of thing.

I did wonder over the last year if you'd have a few wistful looks when you saw one go by, but its great that the UP was the right choice. For me the GRY was the right thing for me, I love driving it and its great for both the cut n thrust driving of the city here and then when you get out of town its just mental when you get to floor it. I cant think of anything else I would want to own right now that would be better for me. Sure I could have an SUV like almost everyone else round here (its a Sydney thing) but the GRY is just a bit of me really.
