Something to think about... I built this bike around 5 years back and never ran it... The OEM airfilter was(is?) brand new and just sat there in the airbox for that time. Its totally dead, flaking foam, falling apart to the touch etc. If i had ran this bike it would have sucked the air filer chunks into the carbs and the engine for sure. Not good... Ok, yes... I know you sposed to service a bike every year and change the filters something like bi-annually etc but its worth remembering that these die even if you dont run the bike. This one has has no contamination, no extra oil, never had fuel in the carbs etc just time has killed it.

I had the same on my R1-Z. Half of the filter was missing. Somehow it ran fine, but good to spot that and a hundred other bodges that were hiding.

Ne pourriez-vous pas en fabriquer dans un filtre de hotte aspirante ?
Couldn't you make some in a fume hood filter ?

Why bother when the OEM one is so cheap? I did look at you can find decent aftermarket filters from the likes of TwinAir, but more exy than oem. I did look as I have a YPVS UniFilter but i tend to fit OEM, its good protection... unless its breaks down and your engine eats it

Well, as I said, I usually always fit OEM if its an OEM airbox.

the bit of old cushion foam which i found inside my airbox has probably been inside as long as the tyres have been fitted (jan 1996, according to the date mark.. ) i'll look into replacing it but to be fair it's better than JonW's..

In the pic the hole is where i very carefully pinched it to remove it, the rub mark was me lightly dragging a finger over the surface and the chunks are what came off when doing that. The whole thing was just waiting to disintegrate and when picked it up again to go in the bin it pretty much shattered, well as much as an oily sponge can... big chunks, small chunks... mess all over the place. Sigh... pretty much brand new... pretty much old stock... hmm... this was new from a big supplier, imagine how long a nos one would last :/

JonW, it's on my next shopping list.. i was surprised that the PO had put back all the plastic bars inside the filter housing, I'm not sure if i'd seen them in the flesh before..
