the father in law mentioned he had received a "red" warning letter from DVLA that he hadnt taxed or sorned one of his old british bikes yet he had not received a reminder to do so !
getting to the point here ; I didnt receive any form of reminder for my historic LC ? due o1/08 .... luckily i jumped in on the 31/07 and renewed for free online !
maybe if it costs zero ... then no reminder ?

Can't recall having any reminders since mine was registered historic, it's due tax end of this month, and I was just going to grab the v5 and do the process on line this week. I might have retaxed it early enough not to trigger a reminder.
I might just leave it, and see if indeed a reminder pops through the post.

My V5 came back in 3 weeks but when I phoned after a couple of weeks direct to DVLA an automated message stated it can take up to 4 weeks to return a V5 and if you don't hear within 4 weeks to phone and confirm.

What are the insurance companies like with the no MOT bit?

I have a classic bike insurance and that seems fine as long as the bike is legal i.e. taxed.

Slightly off topic, but I’ve decided to sell my YPVS. I couldn’t find the logbook, and although I could have sold it without; it would have looked dodgy.
So last weekend I applied for a duplicate online. Really easy to do.
My point to this is a new one dropped through the letterbox in a matter of days! So DVLA can get it right sometimes.

What are the insurance companies like with the no MOT bit? I’ve phoned my insurance company (Peter James) to ask this question specifically. They are fine with it. Perhaps because they deal with classics anyway and know a lot of classics are owned by enthusiasts who probably maintain their vehicles better than some other people with modern stuff. My brother in law has always worked in the car industry of some form or other. He used to MOT them by now just spanner’s them. You might be shocked at some of the things he finds with peoples cars. There was one lad on a FB page, might have been on here too, that stated his insurance company insisted his bike had to have a current MOT, historic or not.
So best to check with your personal cover for their preference, and as I'm with Peter James, as above , they are fine with the situation.
But having a mot or not, come an accident and time to claim, the bike has to be roadworthy either way, a mot test only shows the bike/car passed a certain standard, at that point in time. So it's a moot point to say a mot certificate proves a vehicle is roadworthy, it can develop any number of issues further down the road.

I received a reminder for historic tax renewal in March, IIRC, it was a V11z. Clearly a bit hit and miss. Wasn't there some strikes in place a while back that resulted in reminders not being sent, perhaps still affecting things.
When I renewed my bike insurance, I checked the no MOT part, no problem at all. Also checked at AA renewal because I previously read wording stating the vehicle must have an MOT. Was told not a problem if it's classic and doesn't need it. Hope that's correct, hope I don't need to use it either.

Also whilst going through the process, again substantial modification is mentioned for historic class vehicle's. I took a snap shot of the page, as again its useful information in regard to motorcycles .
