This. I've had a few freeride and one downhill bike before, all sold as I wasn't using them. But during Covid I put on weight (as most of us did!) and decided to do something about it. This is a 2008 Mongoose Double Diamond, not named after the beer sadly, and back then was the best part of £2.5k. I did more research and every review gave it 5/5 so I'm really happy I got this, and at a great price. Owner even delivered it! Need some tweaking (although it's fine to ride as is). The levers are on the wrong sides as it's a US spec bike...no idea why they do that, the French do it too. The new tyres are a nice touch but the front is on the wrong way round, and it has 27 gears and I just want 9. Some spannering to do then! Alex

Lovely Alex and no doubt a great saving, prices are ridiculous now, I used to do mega miles and I Dragged out my original Marin bolinas ridge other day hardtail circa 1998. Might have to get it back on the road only problem is tyre size

Looks great Alex Hope you've got some bicycle clips, helmet and a Sam Brown belt for the mean streets of Shepperton !! Haha! Clips...sheesh. Helmet, err no but I will get one if I go downhilling again. Otherwise it's a chunky padded beanie. No idea what that belt is...does it hold puncture repair kits and a tool for getting stones out of horses hooves? Alex

Tim and Jon...funnily enough my first ever bike was a Marin Hawk Hill, that got improved with a bouncy front end and V brakes. My last Marin was an East Peak, also went down the hybrid route. Sounds like my motorcycles...
Prices have gone bonkers. I've been looking every evening on eBay and either the sellers won't post them or I get outbid on what I consider my very very fair bid.
This was amazingly just £400. And I bid a LOT more just in case!
Working tomorrow (yay! FINALLY some work) but Saturday I'm off for a ride (offroad natch)

Oddly enough, they are! Old Marins, Kleins etc go for daft money. Rather have this though...

Took the bike to a local specialist today for his thoughts. First off he was impressed, and that surprised me as I later found out this guy used to ride downhill and BMX professionally for Poland! He quickly changed the front tyre so it's the right way round and we discussed the brake lever problems. He suggested keeping the Shimano one and junking the ancient Haynes one and replacing it with the same Shimano brake, so he's ordered that for me. Next was the 27 speed set up. Well, I thought it was a 27 but it's an 18. And he said keep it like that, and with sound reasoning. Am I just going to ride downhill and nothing else? No...so it transpires (and I would never have thought of this) that it has 2 cogs for a reason. You use the big cog only for general riding and going uphill, the small cog is for downhill mentalist riding only. Makes perfect sense now. And the peach was what he said about the front forks. I knew they weren't Rock Shox even though they had a sticker on them, but I guessed either Manitou or Marzocchi. They are Marzi Bombers and if I were to buy them new they'd be £200 more than what I paid for the entire bike. Result! Alex

My lad built himself a downhill bike from scratch using a Nukeproof frame. Cost him thousands but it's been sat unused in the garage for years now. He has a Trek Fuel 9 and a Cyclo cross bike and a road bike as well. He hardly used any of them now. A case of girlfriend and house stops play. Shame he was getting into the top twelve at cyclo cross before COVID stopped it and other stuff took over. I look at mine now and again.

My brother used to do a bit of downhill with his Fire Brigade mates
Spend £3k on a carbon framed bike, threw it into a tree on the first outing and broke the frame 😭

That's the problem with CF frames. Very light but not suited to a full on DH bike. Plus the added weight makes you go faster...and crash faster as I have found out more than once...

Are you sure the forks are Marzocchi, don’t recall Marzocchi doing a reverse arch but Manitou certainly did as did Pace but don’t think they are Pace but do look like Manitou Sherman’s. If they were Pace you would be sitting on an interesting set of forks

Well...now you mention it you may be right. Possibly Manitou. However the bike specs from original were Bombers, p'raps they were changed at a later date? If they are something else it's no biggy to swap the decals out. And Pace and Manitou made some great gear. Regardless she rides so well now, stops on a dime and the dropper post works perfectly. Going for another ride tomorrow!

Yes dropper posts are a game changer even on a full on downhill rig, allows you to pedal around without destroying the old knees, then just drop out of the way on the downs. I have an INntense Socom of similar age full eight inches of coil sprung travel at both ends, so plush. Only trouble is at 57 yrs old and carrying a few too many pounds chucking it down a mountain now is a disaster waiting to happen, but having ridden it out in Morzine 8 years ago is full on fun. Still keeping it just in case we get back out there, will thenbe using it to roll down the hills and enjoy the comfy ride. Oh to be mid 30s again.

I agree totally! But I bought this primarily to lose the weight that piled on during Covid. I'm trying to get out on her every day and riding a little further and further. And it's getting easier to do...but my weight is exactly the same! I think this may take months.

My grandfather used to say that losing weight was all bout reducing what you put in, not about working it off. When he hit 50 he dropped 1 spud off his roast dinners and stopped eating Full English breakfasts and he religiously only had 1 square of Cadburys a night. He lost loads of weight over the next few years. He never went to a gym or an extra walk or a jog, and he still consumed bitter the same as he did in his 30s and 40s. Lived til his late 90s.

Glad it worked for him Jon. With me exercise deffo works. I've had weight gains before and for a few months I didn't drive at all apart from getting the shopping in. I cycled a 13 mile round trip every day to look after my mum and wow I got fit. Muscles appeared from areas I didn't know they could exist and so on...
So for me I think this is the best idea. Everyone's metabolism is different and I eat fairly healthy, never have fast food junk and have type 2 diabetes so chocolate is a a rare treat!
