I saw this film years ago and I recall how moved I was watching it. It's on the telly now and no doubt will be repeated (Sony Movies Action). It's well worth seeing. WW1 and how the Canadians won a hugely decisive battle. This was (then) a nation of 8 million people. 600,000 men went to fight and 60,000 never came back.

We went there in 2018, stayed in Ypres and toured around with a mate who is a registered Battlefield Guide. It's vital that we never forget; 20180415_105821 by dusty miller, on Flickr Netflix are airing a German remake of "All quiet on the Western Front" at the moment, plus it's in selected cinemas. I urge you to see it. It is, for me, the best yet portrayal of the hell that was the First World War, and as good as "1917" was, this is a better film. Dusty

Couple of good pod casts on ww1 during one they talked about the filming of this, said because it was purely funded by Canadian business it wasn’t reliant on cgi and could only afford one major battle scene but was better for it. Also check out ‘we have ways of making you talk’ James Holland (noted historian) and Al (the landlord) Murray pod cast. Brilliant.

There is still a last post ceremony every evening at the Menin Gate in Ypres. Very moving and has special significance for the many Canadians that fell.

The Menin Gate is a memorial to the missing - men never found after the fighting in the Ypres salient. There are over 54,000 names on the walls. The Last Post has been sounded at 8pm every night since 1928. It was suspended at the Menin Gate when the Germans occupied Ypres during the second world war, but the bugle call continued to be played at Brookwood Cemetary in Surrey during that time. When the Germans were pushed back by Polish forces in 1944, the Last Post resumed at the memorial; 20170410_115148 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20180415_195946 by dusty miller, on Flickr In 2017 we visited the Somme region. The Newfoundland Memorial at Beaumont Hamel is a very sobering place to visit. A preserved battlefield site, it commemorates the Newfoundland Regiment, that was virtually wiped out in less than an hour, in an unsuccessful attack on July 1st, 1916; 20170409_094911 by dusty miller, on Flickr IMG_7249 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20170409_113745 by dusty miller, on Flickr

What a moving letter. Got a lump in my throat now.
All Quiet on the Western Front is a must see. I need to watch it again.
And Sony Movies Action is Freeview Channel 40.

My great grandad fought and was killed outside Ypres in 1917. He's buried in Hooge crater cemetery. I researched him and found that he went over the top at 4.45am on 16th August 1917. 100 years later we went and stood at the exact spot on the exact day at 4.45 am. Made the hairs stand up I can tell you.
