Hi I understand that AS3 pistons are different to the 125dx does anyone know what the differences are and why they apparently they aren't interchangeable Cheers

Hi I understand that AS3 pistons are different to the 125dx does anyone know what the differences are and why they apparently they aren't interchangeable Cheers If its a true AS3, then its piston port with no holes in the rear for boost port, if its a AS3 with torque induction, it will have reed valves like the RDDX, technically you could use the AS3 piston in the RDDX, but you would loose the boost port operation, I wouldn't advise it, but you can't use the RDDX piston in the AS3 because of the boost port holes in the piston, they are all same size bore and stroke. Also the early 396 (I think) RD used Dykes type rings and the later 1E7 used Keystone type rings, you can use either in either engine (but not in the AS3) the only difference is the ring type they use on these 2 types, pistons are slightly different because of ring type and rings aren't interchangeable between the 2 types.. Ah so that explains a lot, mine has two different pistons, one with boost ports (dx?) One no ports (AS3?)Thought originally skirt had been cut but never had machine marks. It has Reed valves so I'll be checking barrels thinking it's a mix and match. Next question the carbs have a flange so they bolt straight onto barrels with Reed inlets between, but I'd like to put new and bigger carbs on but I would need carb rubbers like the Lc. Any suggestions if it's possible and if so what I could use ? Keith

Keith Done it to a RD200, fitted RD250LC carbs 26mm (4mm increase) manifolds and balance pipe, you have to cut the ears off the back of the manifolds, and pod filters, this can also be done to the 125, it gives a massive torque boost, you will need to up the main jets, this was the best bang for buck mod I did to the bike, no extra speed, just low down grunt, mine would wheely off the throttle with just this lot done, don't bother changing the reeds, it makes no difference, and you can't get RD250LC reed blocks in there. The balance pipe needs bending a little to make fit between the slimmer carb inlets. but it can be done easily. RD250 RD350 RD250LC RD350LC RD350YPVS RD400 all these manifolds will fit, same stud pattern.

That's great thanks, I've got an old set of lc manifolds I can try it with and can now get it sorted with dx pistons Cheers
