Ive not really had much to do with the new E10 petrol but i do understamd that it has the potential to damage older car engines priour to 2011. Does anyone know if it can damage older 4 stroke motorcycle engines?
Is there an additive similar to the lead replacement, for these older engines.
Ive been looking at a z900 for some time.

Don't think it's down to the engine not coping with E10
More to do with the fuel system having rubber/brass parts that aren't compatible

My 1977 Z650 runs just fine on E10. I wouldn't leave it in unused for months on end, but as a regular rider it's fine. Same with the 2 strokes.

Personally I use super unleaded, its worth the extra 10p a litre for peace of mind.
Though saying that, I am not that bothered about my RF900 1997 model, have used e10 in there a couple of times, and that can be left out in the cold under a cheap cover for months without moving, yet it always fires up and runs fine, whatever fuel is in it, I have had split fuel pipe twice on it, changed to green Ariete pipe last year, still gone hard, but not cracked.
I will travel to put super unleaded in my 2 stroke bikes, but not too bothered about sticking e10 in the RF (YET) until I find out it truly is the Devil's spawn that is.

I only use Esso super plus unleaded in all my bikes, as it is the only one guaranteed to not have any Ethanol in it.
The Ethanol can cause corrosion and is hygroscopic, so can attract water from fuel and cause more corrosion.

i use super when i can get it but the bigger problem with Ethanol in fuel is it absorbs water which then causes the problems, other countries have been using Ethanol for many years without problems ,at least in engines that get used on a regular basis.

I don't use E10 in anything. Ethanol free petrol is scarce here, none of my local garages sell it so I have to use E5. I grimace when I put it in the Spitfire but so far so good.

The minimum you need to do if running E10 is to go through carbs and replace all the rubber 'O'rings, choke plunger seals and fuel pipes etc with ethanol resistant viton and then make sure you don't leave the bike sat for long periods without flushing it through otherwise it gums up the carb internals in no time. E10 in itself won't damage the actual engine although you do notice a drop in performance with it. I have 5 Z900/1000's and personaly i avoid E10 like the plague.

There is less energy locked up in E10. It doesn't seem to make much difference with an ECU controlled engine as the brain just puts a bit more fuel through, but with worse fuel consumption, obviously.

A weird thing I found that the carbs on my 2002 Bonneville have really clean internals ,even when left for long periods but my LC which has premix in the tank all the time does show discolouration, so is the 2 stroke oil having some sort of reaction to the ethanol
