Hi and welcome to my YZR500 Replica project, Although it says started by dusty350 this is a slight mistake as the project is being done by myself Watkins58. I did make a mess with my first couple of postings and dusty350 came to my rescue and sorfted it all out, thanks dusty.
So, i'm coming towards the end of my working career, and really need omething else to concentraste on, I have just finished my RZ500 refresh and now its time to get stuck into my YZR500 Replica project. I am at the very early stage haveing already got an RD500LC motor, and have just purhased an SZR660 and stripped it down just for the main chassis, and have sent this to NK Racing to take my engine.

You just missed an NK converted chassis on eBay.
My mate had one in the past sold it half done to his mate, who then did a bit and left it, so my mate just bought it back, so is in the process of finishing it off. He has just been sorting the paintwork. He has an original 3MA tank, but it has some rust inside. I have loaned him my spare 4DL tank to try to see if that will work for him.
I will try to get pics next time I see him.

Just a heads up about the SZR rear shock position. Basically it sits where ideally two of your exhausts should go. Speak to Nigel about it. I've seen a few conversions on these chassis and the pipe builder I use has sent a couple away because of the position of the rear shock. It sits low in the middle of the chassis.
They do look good when done properly.

My frame, swing arm and yolks are already at NK Racing, The Fuel tank is another worry, I have messaged a guy who makes Carbon Fibre tanks for the Aprilia RS250 and he is looking into sourcing a mold for the SZR/YZR500

In the second photo, you can see the crancase cover which Royal Mail/The Post Office appear to have lost (my other post on here "An urgent appeal) at this moment in time

Great build, I am looking forward to seeing this one. I did a similar build 15 years ago but using the original frame and Kawasaki parts, yzr500 plastics and Nikon pipes, looked stunning in Marlboro colours. Some guy buying my z thou saw it and made me an offer so I let it go for 4k…..those were the days. Looking at that szr, even though it’s a rare beast on our roads I reckon it’s a good job it’s coming off the road, it’s fugly.

Can't agree more mate, didn't have it in one piece for long, neighbours would have complained

Had a very good week on the project, Forks (from a 2010 R6) have come back from SWB Racing. They are a local company who specalise in Suspension setup and servicing in South Wales. The forks have had new K-tech cartridge sets, new springs, oil and have been re-anodized, and they look absolutly stunning. I have loosely attached the Brembo M4 brake calipers, just to see what they look like (wish i had those calipers in Black)
Wheels have also come back from powder coating
and have been fully dressed, Brembo Serie Oro discs, all new bearings and seals, completed with Pirelli Diablo tyres. Other items that have arrived this, is the Dry Clutch assembly from Georgios Sotirchos, Here is the complete kit from George
The quality and feel of these items is absolutely amazing, i cannot beleive how good they look, The adaptor for hydraulic clutch is also on its way from georgios. I would like to pause here to say a big thank you to Georgios, He has picked up on my plea for a replacement Clutch cover (An Urgent appeal on this forum) and has offered me a modified clutch cover for very little money, I think he has probably lost money on this casing. Providing Royal Mail doesn't losse this one it should be here same time as the engine is being rebuilt. so a very sincere Thank you to Georgios, you really have come along and saved my project mate.

The Chassis work is progressing nicely, but i do need to make a decision on fairings and seat unit. I've spend the afternoon searching for sugestions on what fairings to buy, becuase i want it to replicate Wayne Rainey's 1992 bike. I know that Rainey's bike has been copied many times over, but i was so inspired to see him at Goodwood Festival of Speed, so thought thats the replica for me. I know King Carbon and Harris can supply kits for early 1990's YZR, but not sure how much work is involved making these fit my SZR chassis. Could i get a later 2001 Fairing from NK Racing and then just worry about getting an earlier tail unit to fit? or would the later fairing and early tail unit not work together asthetically?

Since the NK Racing fairing is a proven solution that’s probably the best way forward - however if you want the 92 look then the King Carbon fairings are available in standard YZR and also a modified version to allow for the pipes, airbox, alternator , clutch etcetera . Cheers Paul

Thanks Paul, I'll make enquiries with King Carbon If you live near NW Leicestershire I have a set of the modified fairings that you can take a look at to see if they suit your SZR chassis. Cheers Paul

Hi Paul, Thank you for the offer, i really do appreciate it. I'm down in South Wales but I will be going upto NK Racing in a couple of weeks to pick up my chassis, would there be an opportunity for me to pop the frame up and have a look at your fairings at that time?
