Early 50’s I’m still fairly active but I’ve suddenly had two things happen that I never imagined would impinge on my ability to ride. When I was 17 big RTC left leg ended up 1 1/2 inches shorter never been a problem but recently really started to feel it. When for test rides yesterday on an Aprilia Rs660, and Mt09 and a street triple rs 765 I can barely walk today I’m in that much agony. Also when I was away at the Manx I noticed my left eye being a bit cloudy turns out I’ve a cataract, thankfully I’ve private insurance so I can get it done soon. When did we suddenly get old? Can’t believe I’ve also got to re think what bikes I can ride. I know they are 1st world problems. Anyone else suddenly noticing this ageing process?

Arthritus is my issue - has been for a few years now, and I'm 56 next week. It's why I left the Fire Service when I did, due to a back injury that resulted in scans, and the verdict I had osteo arthitus in my spine, as well as 2 prolapsed discs Just sitting on an Lc gives me sharp pain in my hip, hence I haven't ridden properly in a few years now. My MRI back in 2015 showed my skeleton covered in black spots - all over. These are sites of arthritus apparently, and although I didn't feel it then, I do now - ankles, knee, fingers etc. But I dont take any medication for it, am active every day, and still feel strong, but I avoid certain movements now, and always prepare properly to lift something, no matter how light or heavy it may be. Standing still for an amount of time is a killer on my back, as is slow walking. Goodness knows what I will be like in 20 years time !!

I had a brutal accident on a bike aged 17 as well. Since then my right knee has always given me grief. Had back issues since I was 15 but no one has ever figured out why. For the last 4 days whilst waiting for new furniture I have been sitting on cushions on the floor. Agony, until the numbness set in, then almost impossible to stand up accompanied by actual screaming with all the pain. Odd thing is I can still ride a bike with rear sets and clip ons and get in and out of a very low Spitfire with no issues at all. But time is fleeting and age catches up with us all.

Age doesn't come on its own unfortunately
Diabetic neuropathy and Fibromyalgia for me so can't really ride much anymore ☹
Steve
On a non age related illness ive spent the last 4 years with Iron defficient anaemia and stomach/bowel issues. Turns out I had a helicobacter pylori infection in my stomach
Feels like I'd swallowed a live rat and it was trying to eat it's way back out 😖

The original post hopefully wasn’t seen as ‘poor me’ just a feck how quick does it sneak up on you. I know there are people on here with far more complex illnesses and injuries and no matter who you are, look after yourself. Take it easy chaps and it’s great to know we are all for the majority old bastids still thinking we are 18 👍

Fybro is an awful thing. I now know of one other person with it. But it's amazing how our bodies can adjust to these kind of things. Not known a pain free day in many years but like everyone else I just get on with it. But after hearing of others ailments I count myself lucky. All I can say is live life to the fullest. And as LC owners I think we all do that anyway!

I’m older than most on here and have been lucky with my health so far. Was skiing in NZ a month ago on a seniors lift ticket for the first time.😂 I stay off bikes with rear sets and clipons but still ride long distances. All I would say is keep using what you can. When you stop using it it’s a slippery slope.

I've just been thinking about this as well Tim
I've just hit the higher side of 50, i still ride bikes with clipons and rear sets although i find it hard to crouch down low on the tank and stick my knee out. Now and then i get cramp in the top of my left thigh when mounting a sports bike. These are a small price to pay for the fun i have. As mentioned above i don't want to stop doing this in fear of seizing up.
Last week i met a Belgium man called Rudy 65 years old. He set the fastet lap times on two seperate tracks from the whole group i was with. It started to rain when he was out on the track with sliks on and he fell off. I was worried about him but when he came back a little pumped with adrenaline pushed his bike into the big van and pulled out his other bike which he called his wet bike. I was a bit gobsmacked by this and it is a good example of growing old in my books. I have to add he has a race suit with an air bag.
I have just been donated a Suzuki 650 Bandit. It felt like and old comfy arm chair after spending two days bent up double on a track bike. I thought straight away it's nice but NO! not yet.
The irony is find it more difficult when i walk up a steep set of stairs due to my knees and one ankle, or put socks and shoes on due to my back.

I have to wear glasses for reading and close up work now. First noticed when I was still at work - in the back of the pump on the way to a shout on a neighbouring stations ground, I had to look up the road in the Surrey Atlas. Realised I couldn't make out the words as they were blurry. Handed the atlas to my oppo who is 20 years younger than me, and he couldn't make them out either !! Made me feel better about it ! I used to have 20/20 vision, but it deteriorated VERY quickly, but now seems to have levelled out a bit, but I find it a real pita to have to keep taking glasses off, then putting them on, then off etc etc. Dusty

Tony my mates who I go to the Manx with, one is 66 rides a zx10 and is in the fast group at track days the other one whose more like my dad is 77 rides a 765 and is fast as the rest of us, had cancer several times. I can’t ride anything remotely sporty know it just screws my old injuries up and leaves me in agony but my Lc with rear sets is fine, go figure. Like dusty up until I was 50 my eye sight was perfect then literally over night bang I wear glasses now for reading and as I say suddenly got a bloody cataract. I’ve no intentions of stopping riding for as long as possible I’ll just have to adapt, I think it was test riding the Rs660 that did it.

I've got the same eye issues. About 7 years ago I picked up my book and was slightly alarmed to realise I could only read it at arms length. One eye test later I have reading glasses and yes they work fine but what a pain when I need to do fiddly bike/car bits. Last test they gave me new glasses and they were worse than my original set, plus driving glasses! And that made driving nigh on impossible. Both are in the bin...

Forgot about glasses, don't call me Magoo for nothing 😂
Had to get reading glasses in 2016 and now need varifocals for driving as can't read the dash
Doesn't help having double vision either 😬
I blame it on one of the meds for the Neuropathy. They are supposed to alter the way your brain interprets nerve signals but did warn of permanent visual changes
Didn't have double vision before taking them but when I stopped them it never went away

I was shocked how fast things can change, hart attack last year, one month after suddenly loosing my brother to Cancer, then a couple of months pass and my eye swells up, the ducts were blocked, not even Morphine reduced the pain, operation on both eyes over 2 weeks, couldn't do both at the same time as I wouldn't be able to see anything, also under consideration for another 2 ops on eyes (glaucoma), then as I am on anti coagulants I notice rather a lot of blood when no2, I have to have an op to remove a polyp, and they are considering cutting out some of my bowel as there is a partial blood flow blockage, I am 57, at 56 I didn't expect all that, and certainly not all within around 7 months, I had been ignoring the blood for years as it was intermittent, I ignored my hart attack for 7 hours hoping the pain would just go away, would have been less damage if I had gone to Hospital sooner, same with all the issues, DON'T IGNOR STUFF

I am 56 and have had constant headaches for over 10 years, and have had ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for about 4 years now. Some days you just need to chill out or sleep. Luckily I work in a school part time, so get plenty of holidays, and they are very understanding. I have golfer's and tennis elbow in both arms and some cartilage damage in my knees from heavy weight training. My eyes are getting worse, so need to get another eye test for more glasses.
I recently noticed I was getting a few skin tags, which I thought was just another sign of getting old, but doctor said it is a sign of pre-diabetes, so I have been on a Keto diet for about 6 weeks and lost about 10 lbs so far. Apparently, the skin tags and the pre-diabetes can be reversed by fat loss...
I can still ride my bikes, so try to get out whenever there is no rain. I still thrash the f**k out of them whenever they go out.
You need to keep on top of all these things happening, as some are not just getting older, but need looking into or treatment.

I am 56 and have had constant headaches for over 10 years, and have had ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for about 4 years now. I've also got M.E. Relapsed just over 3 years ago and it's really f**ked things up for me. Can only work part time from home, and can barely get out the house these days. Takes everything I've got to do work and a tiny bit round the house to try and take some of the pressure off my wife. The bikes will have to go in the next 12mths, when I can spend some energy to get them ready to sell. The only upside is at least there's some research happening now showing it's a physical malady. Have you signed up for this study? First large genetic study looking for clues that might lead to treatment and cures. www.decodeme.org.uk/

I used to be the most f**ked person I know then three years ago my best mate died for 20 minutes from cardiac arrest, he's good now but he definitely trumps my ailments by miles so I don't whinge. Tim, early 50's, f**k me you had a long paper round lol.

I've been without work for a month now, but thankfully I'm getting some now. I say thankfully but...
Today should have been a doddle for me. Fitting a new inner wing on a Ford Focus, repairing damage to the rear quarter panel and painting it. After 2 hours I was flagging. My back was killing me and my arm didn't want to do anymore sanding. However I got through the pain and finished the job. The owner was delighted. I drove home on auto pilot and feel so tired now I think my cerebellum has fused along with my back and shoulder. Got more stuff next week, got to do it or I don't get paid.

getting old sucks, I find I make noises that I never use to make when I bend down to tie my shoe laces, also every bone in my body aches and all of my old injuries from rugby, judo, athletics and motorbike accidents have started to remind me of those injuries, especially when its cold - oh yeah, Autumn's on its way - deep joy ! Like most I am in my late fifties, and even though I could retire, I won't as I know that's a slippery slope, plus I love fixing motorbikes and messing with stuff and it keeps me active, plus I meet some great people. I have various ailments and a certain condition that makes me susceptical to cancer, 50% more likely to get it, but I don't let that govern my life or choices, I just get on with it, lost too many friends who died too early for various reasons, so I feel blessed that I am still here with my family enjoying myself (well most of the time!) Remember, you only grow old when you stop riding motorbikes !

Lordy Quite a roll call of Ailments. An unpleasant scenario indeed. I'm 72 Next month, and except for needing reading glasses. No ailments that I'm aware of.. so far. Most all of my relates made it well into their 90 s though. So it's possible Genetics has Dominion. Or so I hope.

Here we go then. I'm 59, yes I know it's hard to believe, and I'm currently between jobs. When I have spent a couple of days doing stuff in the garage I pay for it in aches for a couple of days. It's kind of made my mind up that going back on my tools is probably not for me. Eyesight started to go about a year after starting to work sitting on my @rse looking at a computer about 15 years ago.
My Dad is still knocking around at 89 and is still of sound mind. So maybe my chances are half good of getting another 20 years into this game? He exercises with dumbbells 3 or 4 times a week and swears by it. He moans about not being strong enough to do the things he used to do like climbing his ladder to clean the gutters. Which reminds me that my Mam wants me to give them to my lads to remove the temptation for him to use them.

Old age...tonight I thought I'd have some casserole. I make a load of it and freeze some for later. When it had thawed out I made some stock in a coffee cup, poured that over it and let it simmer on the stove. Came back later on and noticed another coffee cup...full of stock. I had poured my actual coffee over the casserole. Frantically drained it all off and added the stock. Tasted a little odd but I ate it anyway.
It gets worse. In the morning I poured out some Rice Crispies and turned the kettle on. Milk on the cereal, then sprinkle coffee on. Bit of sugar in the coffee cup. Take one mouthful and have my 'oh oh' moment. This is not the first time I have done this...

I'll be 55 this February.
Spent my childhood, teens and twenties falling off bicycles, skateboards and motorbikes.
Despite the decades of abuse and physical labor work as a carpenter, I've made it this far in relatively solid shape.
Eyes are slowly going, and hearing's f**ked from years of power tools, loud guitars and cymbal crashes.
Sleep Apnea was one thing I took care of this year. A CPAP machine made a huge improvement to my sleep quality and overall energy level.
Still comfortable on the motorbikes, and looking forward to snowboarding again this winter.
Hoping to spend my twilight years longboard surfing in warm water.
Better get saving as my bank account's f**ked too.

Skateboards...oddly I still look at them on eBay. Last had a longboard (skateboard) about 10 years ago, but I think you're talking about surfing. And that I will be doing again one day. I made my last board into a coffee table...bit of a mistake there.
