What do you write on a receipt when you sell a second hand vehicle?

I think the default is 'sold as seen'. Unless you wish to provide any specific guarantees?

Rarely give a receipt, its not a shop, its a private sale, No receipt, they give you cash, you give them bike, end of, if they don't give you cash, you don't give them the bike, unless your offering a take back of some description, the add should say sold as seen if you want, but in a private sale they have NO come back anyway unless you have offered it.
From tinternet law firm
Private sales
So as long as the description has not been misleading, you do not have the right to ask for your money back if you are unhappy with what you have bought or if there is a problem with the item
Technically, the less you right in the add the better.

Apart from all the usual suspects mentioned above such as Reg number, selling price, sold as seen and a signed receipt for each party, also I specifically mentioned a date and time. I sold a V6 golf a while back. The guy lived in Manchester and came all the way down to Rochester for it on the train. He drove it back. Through the Dartford crossing toll without realising he had to pay. A few days later I got a fine. Was an easy email to attach the receipt showing time and date for them to realise it wasn’t me. Works with other more serious road offences such as speeding. Jon

Jon Yes that is a concern these days, but receipt can be altered, copied and changed, or even denied, and then argued in court, I suppose with this in mind, a photo taken on your phone of bike being in possession of new owner would be the best bet, it would be time and date stamped, you can't alter the time when taken part, and copies are stamped too with date copied, so if going to court these things can be established better than a hand written receipt, your best bet of giving time and date. The thing is there are some real bar stewards about, someone could supposedly buy your bike take away, strip some good bits, put their knackered old bits on and try to return it, saying it was like this, I seen this with a car on one of those scam shows, They left the car at the house without saying and contacted paypal, as that's how they paid, and paypal gave their money back, under the not as described clause, they can try all sorts, and do these days, so I suppose a photo of them leaving, taken under the guise of nostalgia would be a very good idea. As I said earlier the less you put in the add the better, or receipt if you give one, just sold as seen and what it is, and you can't tell a scammer by the way they look, you only find out when its too late, private sales are mostly done on a mutual trust basis, but we are living in bad times. I normally get my new bikes delivered and take a photo when it arrives with the person pushing it into my garden, you never know as some sort of proof of seller, after thinking about this, I will now also take photo when bikes are sold with new owner pushing bike or touching it, much harder to argue in court. I also never give the house number ( unless I am happy with buyer ) and have them phone me when they arrive, I just give post code, most have sat nav to find you, and that doesn't need the house number, that is also another way of determining the time and date of sale.

Film the transaction and the "receipt" showing sold as seen and signed with the purchaser at the time of sale? Nearly everyone bar Luddites like me, has a mobile (big brother tracking and sales influencing device, and lie feeding medium) capable of filming. Best case scenario is sell to a friend or trusted one, or at least someone of known good character, not always possible though......

Yeah, that will be time and date stamped too, sad we have to be so suspicious, but that's the way of the world now, a praying mantis waiting to pounce at the slightest chance around every corner, and the higher the value, the more chance of running into a bad bar steward.

Oh I've found out alright I'm not going to change the way I think because of shitehawks.... Kwai Chang got it right, The two are not compatible Steve, even if only 10 % of the population are bad, that is still 700 000 000 shitehawks to watch for, and even if as low as 1% which we know its far higher it, would still be 70 Million. You can't even pick up the phone worry free anymore, someone trying to scam you some how, pretending to be bank or Amazon or Microsoft or Police ect ect ect ect. Though there are ways to get me to trust you straight away, only I know what they are, but sceptical as I am even I could still get caught out by the newest scam maybe, if not totally vigilant. Trust people out the blue at your own risk, I know there are far more good than bad, but the bad are waiting for their chance, all the time, they only need to get lucky once, you have to be lucky all the time not to come across one.

I once used a note from the AA, reads like this. If you're selling a used car, print two copies of our car seller's contract and complete them in front of the buyer. Each party should sign and keep a copy of this document as proof of sale. Car details Make .............................................................. Model............................................................... Registration number........................................... Mileage............................................................. Vehicle identification number matches V5C? yes/no Registration Document completed by buyer/seller yes/no Registration Document (V5C) exchanged yes/no Buyer has received V5C/2 (green slip) yes/no The undersigned purchaser acknowledges receipt of the above vehicle in exchange for the cash sum of £.........., this being the price agreed by the purchaser with the vendor for the above named vehicle, receipt of which the vendor hereby acknowledges. It is understood the vehicle is sold as seen, tried and approved by the purchaser. Purchaser.......................................................... Vendor.............................................................. Date................................................................. Download here if you want, it might offer some ideas. www.theaa.com/~/media/the-aa/pdf/motoring-advice/aa-car-buyers-sellers-contract.pdf?rev=1f55e9ef06b24649a4f95d006179e3ef&hash=9549DDB5D10D36A4E46E1DB0B3727773

In NSW in Aus you need a receipt to register the bike in your name... not least as they use the amount to work out the stamp duty you pay to do so.
There is some good advice in this thread, its worth noting that all of us have to trust the other party at some point in the process.
