I thought early com stars were prone to cracking? Later ones may be ok though. Andy.

The top pair are later XBR500, about £95 the pair...
The other one is CB750 and about £50.
Sounds like they need checking over thoroughly before use, but certainly a cheap option compared to approx £1000 for spoke wheels.

Wheels can make or break the look for me, these are to obviously Honda wheels so I’d say not. Ex race wheels Rob are the way forward. Spoked wheels generally aren’t that light, nor are astralite wheels. Do you want single or twin disc? Get a set of race wheels get them crack tested etc then get them properly coated not just powder coated. I’d look for depending on the size 18 in 17in? Dymags, mt/rs125 wheels same as mine, the difference a set of lightweight wheels make is quite incredible.

I have a set of Suzuki wheels in the loft – ‘think’ from memory they are off an RG250 – any use to you?

I think 18 inch rims would look better at keeping it period. I totally agree with Veg and try to find some proper race rims. There are a few good sites around. Sometimes you just have to be patient or get lucky. Not everyone thinks that their old parts are gold. There are normal people out there. I have heard a few stories about leaky Com Star rims, best to avoid unless they peel your bannana.

Proper race wheels may not be suitable for this bike as it will be a road bike and track bike, so need to be strong to withstand pot holes.

Sorry Rob but I think those wheels look awful. Even on a Honda. Would old A/C spoke wheels not work? Some had a disc, some a drum front. Depends on what your after but they'll be able to handle a pot hole or two.

Rob when I fitted my marchesini wheels I spent ages speaking to a wheel specialist and got them tested etc, he reckons that as long as you aren’t hitting massive pot holes they’ll be fine, they race on the road etc with them, he said that if you hit a big enough pot hole to damage them likely as not you’d do the same to a std wheel. Also spoke to Tony foale, and as was dymag, all basically said the same, now I know the wheels on the Medd Rc45 collapsed on roberts bike at the TT, but I believe couple of reasons for that. I do have a set of spoke hubs xs650-rd rear but as I say no lighter really than std wheel.

To me, ‘Cheap option’ , and ‘TZ350 project’ seem mutually exclusive phrases !

Onna TZ really! ?? Grotty is a suitable descriptor. Ali rims w Spokes and Large discs. Even the later versions Ali wheels weren't nearly as pretty.

Nice wheels, but I think I need to stick with 18" ones to get the proportions looking right.

Probably have to stick with plan A, which is using the Aircooled RD350 rear wheel and building a front spoked wheel based on an XS650 hub.

I realise you've made your decision, but I'd still like to hear if anyone else found anything suitable. I keep toying with the idea of making a TZ replica at some point. Wire spokes are nice, but most TZs seem to get converted to alloy wheels for actual racing. I've idlily been looking at 18" wheels on ebay, but not really found anything yet. The difficult bit is getting wheels both wide enough and matching front to rear.
RD400, are the right style, but too narrow. Yam XS are mostly shaft drive, but there is at least one chain drive 18" rear wheel, but nothing to match at the front (they all seem to be 19") BMW K100 3 spoke front, but no matching rear. Odd style, different left to right. Ducati Pantah or Darmah, look ideal, but not as common as the Japanese manufacturers. Still not exactly wide. Kawasaki GPZ550, have a odd disc mounting PCD.
Since anyone with the slightest TZ knowledge would spot that it was not the real thing anyway, perhaps the best thing to do is just fit some common 17" wheels, not worry about it and enjoy the better tyre choice.
