I never met anyone in the 80's or 90's who gave a monkeys about matching numbers, they were bought to ride. The Japanese didn't even put engine numbers on their domestic bikes.
There is nothing necessarily wrong with any type of owner, but they're unlikely to ever see eye to eye, I have some matching numbers bikes but I don't get any extra enjoyment because of it and I don't understand people that do. We're all different I suppose, for example I genuinely don't get people that show original bikes, you didn't design it or fabricate it, the most you can say is that you assembled some parts that other people made and then polished it and wheeled it into the show. It wouldn't give me any pleasure, but each to their own.

+1 it’s simply worth a bit more as it’s rarer. No more of a bike than a non matching 4L1.

Or I guess if you were a collector, then it would be important ?

My bike has matching numbers (5E0 cos it's Australian), but only because it just happened to be that way when I bough it. I couldn't care less tbh, and it wasn't a thing that mattered when I was looking. As has been said... it doesn't make it faster or better to ride.

The laugh of it is I suspect they were all made on the same line to the same quality standards, just a few minor region mods to comply?
Just down to the guy picking up a different stamp.
Anyway by know that time warp from the factory ideal is far from correct. For example a painter won’t pay any less or more attention if it’s an import or a 250 or a 350.

I don't think I have checked any of my bikes for matching numbers, I bought them because I like and wanted them.

There is a big difference in bike values. I would not want to buy a non matching numbers bike and i do have one , for the price of a matching numbers bike. Its just about perceved vaules in the market place .

Very true. They do give the sensation of Speed but you are basically riding at grandads pace compared to modern bikes.

Having said that, Last Tuesday I was just riding along at 6000 rpm when I think an MT07 (I'm not sure it looked a bit like a transformer) overtook me. I pulled out and started to follow him (I'm Billy no mates). I noticed he seemed to be leaning very enthusiastically into the corners and making space between us when cars moved out the way (I was still in top just throttling on). When we got to a fast part I had to change down a few gears to get the bike into the powerband to chase him. I ended up riding around him at 10000 rpm in top on a fast bend. He slowed down after that. I must admit he did have a satchel type man bag. I broke my Speedo cable or my Speedo. It was my mph one. Fingers crossed it's the cable.

40 plus year old technology for 50 yr plus old gits to help feel free and 18 again. PRICELESS Motorcycling equivalent of viagra, a line of toot and a buxom blonde running her hand through your long gone hair.

I agree with you. And the folks who are buying them to "relive their youth" ..... did they realise back in the day that eng and frame numbers matched? No....probably only a very small number of owners knew that. The youths were too busy riding and enjoying them just as Mr Yamaha san intended! So it's all bollix! I have no idea where the numbers matching desirability bias comes from or when it started. BITD the only numbers that mattered, were the numbers on your bank account as to whether you had the funds or not....

Looking back to my youf, all the bike that i purchsed, i never once checked the engine number. Mainly the reg number and the log book, bit nieve looking back. I can only guess it collectors that have made us all look at the "matching numbers" thing 🙈
