I was doing my usual Sunday eBay search, and I can’t get over the number of LC’s for sale at crazy prices. I know we’re approaching summer and a lot of bikes sell roundabout now; but there is definately a lot to choose from (if you want to pay big) at the moment.
1 for £15k, 7 for around £12k and another 10 for £8k and above.

They ain't selling at those prices
I think the Covid buying frenzy is over but dealers are still thinking the supply/demand value is still the same
Don't get me wrong, an original unrestored bike will still command big money

"They ain't selling at those prices"
I heard the same on a pawn broking prog on TV, people say "I want $thousands for this as I've seen it advertised on line for that", the reply is usually "was that the asking or the selling price?" It is always the former.

According to this: www.inflationtool.com/british-pound/1983-to-present-value?amount=1050&year2=2022&frequency=yearly£1050 in 1983 is equivalent to 3276.45 today. But, the value of money isnt always the full story. If you had kept it and insured and taxed and did repairs and maintenance and even restored it to make it nice... well it would have cost you 'a lot'. Its been 40 years of that. Also... I bet £1050 in 1983 was a lot of money to you. You probably paid it on HP and even then it was most of your disposable income. You likely didnt have a mortgage or car loan or holidays to take, just beer, chips, fuel and condoms to buy etc. So over say 2 years it was well over 50% of your disposable income weekly. Even if you spent £10k on a nice one and loaned that over 2 years its not going to be as much of your disposable income I'll wager. Anyway, we all value things differently and didnt all have the same income when buying our first or most recent bikes, but whenever i wish Id kept one of my vehicles I try to think how that would have actually worked out is all.

Yeah probably would have left it in a damp shed for 30 years to turn to dust while the kids grew up,bloody kids 😂😂

Tis an interesting lens to view the ‘value’ topic…. I’m trying to think what other assets I had apart from the clothes I stood in when I bought my 1980 LC for £620 second hand in 1982. A few tools…? hammer , mole grips and a Halfords socket set…. So call that zero ! A few spare parts … but that’s nothing… had a GF, but in the balance sheet of life even though she was a diamond, she would be classified as a liability who regularly rinsed me..! So in reality, my LC was everything and I was totally ‘invested’ in it, mind, body and soul!
Fast forward, fortunately I still have that bike, still feel the pain of selling the AC 350 I had to sell to buy it, but in terms of material assets life has moved on and as a home owner, property dominates ‘my stuff’. Unless I do a good job of spending the equity the kids will get that so were I to ‘spend’ even 10k by fiddling with my mortgage thats £300 a year.. almost negligible impact on life. So easy to see why prices are what they are… As for my GF, she’s now my wife and after all that time probably finally broken even with her ! 🙈😂
