Hi all,
Hope you're all having a good break,
I am needing some stanchions rechromed and was going to use Brook Suspension at Bradford but they're closed and it's a six week turn round so I started looking for an alternative, I found motorbike fork rechroming at Doncaster, has anyone used them ? There's only one review in five years so any feedback is much appreciated,
I would buy new stanchions but incredibly neither I or anyone else can identify the exact model of FZR400 that they came from,
Cheers

Post them down to All Bike Engineering
They will either rechrome or make new ones for you
Think everywhere will have a bit of a wait and a lot of places will be shut till Jan 4th

Hi, I've used Philpots twice, they used a Hard Chrome which seems to be very durable (but not as bright as standard finish). Can rebuild the forks as well if you want a one stop shop (I provided all the parts), I had one set of sliders finished in black powder coat and another polished up. Really impressed with these guys and the service they provided, well worth the coin.
Cheers Al.
PS. Chromers always seem to be busy 6 to 8 weeks is pretty standard for them (get everything you want done at once).

Dynasurf in Cheshire for me, did an outstanding job on me Exup forks, Brooks told me they were not doing rechroming any more? Andy.

I used Philpots to rechrome my YPVS forks. I picked them as they were a well known name. In fairness they did a good job, but what a wait. Quoted around 6 weeks and was more like 12. They kept saying the chrome was not coming out right.
I would use them again, but with alternatives like ABE (who have also done some good work for me) I’d be tempted to try someone else.

Thanks for that, I was just about to post my stanchions to philpotts but if they're not accurate on quoted delivery times I'll have a rethink and it will either be Brook Suspension who I suspect don't actually do it themselves or ABE who I'm pretty sure do the work themselves,
Cheers

Yeah it’s a real shame. I know I’m not the only one, and when it starts affecting their business surely they need to rethink?

I've only used philpotts twice
Once in the 1990's and once in the 2010's
1990's was a GPZ, 2010's was RGV
Both seemed to take forever, both when I called were delayed by an imperfection recurring
To be fair when both arrived back you could see there had been issues.
When I got the GPZ ones back They had told me that one leg had an imperfection that they had reground and rechromed a few times
Sure enough there was one small pit that was nowhere near the swept area which I filled with epoxy to protect. You could see at a hole in the stanchion there were layers of chrome so they were being truthful. Pity the feckers weeped for all the time I owned the bike
The RGV ones were a similar story and you could see layers at an oil hole where the edge was uneven from repeated chroming, grinding, chroming so a lot is out of there control when working with 30+ year old steel

Well the only option was rechroming in the end, apparently no-one makes replacement stanchions off the shelf for the 41mm FZR400 forks that I'm using, they're a rare model so they're in for rechroming, hopefully the jobs now sorted, I will be fitting emulators and pre load adjustable caps when they're rebuilt, also having to make my own damper rod piston rings, it's been hard work getting them sorted out !

I've used Dynasurf for years. They are in Sandbach in Cheshire, and were quite quick about it last time I sent them a couple of sets. Dave

I had three sets (2 x 4L0 and 1 x F2) done by Philpot at the same time about a year ago. They quoted six weeks I think and they were posted back almost 6 weeks to the day. I've not rebuilt the forks with any of them yet but they look good. I was offered a discount for two sets and then another for the third set so I sent them all even though I didn't need them all at once. I did all or most of my communication by email and they were pretty quick at getting back to me. BTW a lot of fork seal leaking problems are caused by dirt getting into the seal. Clean the seal/s out and the issue goes away. Doesn't work all the time but worth trying before you immediately strip and change the seals. Not going to help if they are covered in pits obviously
