It does say that the engine has suffered chain damage and it did go through the engine number, which has been re-stamped.

It does also say "professionally" re-stamped, which is stretching it a bit

Professionally Re-Stamped by a 4 year old by the look, wonder if he has pictures of the engine number before the chain damage occurred to back up his story ?

To be fair its not a bad looking bike and i have seen worse go for(advertised) more.i would guess 7k would own it no problem. i bet there are plenty out there that have had a similar repair job done but i agree that the stamping could have been better.

I would not spend any amount of money restoring/hybridising something with an engine number that looks like that. But to each their own. Maybe the chain went through the actual numbers. Such a shame. Be better off with non matching cases...by a long chalk Them numbers say seize me to plod..... I've worked with professionals of similar stature................

Irrespective of the circumstances around this particular engine I am becoming more of the opinion that Yamaha could have designed their engine cases a little stronger. Or have the numbers on the other side of the motor. Mmmm now where have I seen that before?š¤

What is Soichiro Hona supposed to have said? ā I can engineer for speed, I can engineer for reliability, but I canāt engineeer for neglectā. Iāve had so many bikes with bloody chain damage. Iāve never had a chain snap, can only assume neglect!

The last of the aircooled Rd's had the engine numbers on the clutch side; 20200525_155015 by dusty miller, on Flickr These engines share a lot of architecture with the Lc's and Pv's, so you do wonder why the engine number moved across to the other side ? Dusty

I think a major factor years ago was an incorrectly fitted split link on the chain, lots of would be mechanics fitted them incorrectly and they would eventually come apart, not the chain itself failing just the failure of the link to stay together, thankfully not such a common occurence these days with soft link chains.

You have to remember that itās only the Uk and Japanese bikes with stamps on the left hand side the rest of the world was on the right hand side.

I had a new GSX600F that almost lost it's original chain. It was about half worn, heard a rumble from behind and not from me. A pin on one of the hard links walked almost completely out. Luckily it was caught in time and replaced. Bike chains used to be utter shite and stretch after a hard launch or two. Nothing like the good stuff we can get today, if you avoid the real cheapies.

That's a fair bit of chain damage, normally wouldn't go into the stamped number area, unlucky, or lucky depending on your view.
Wouldn't touch it.

Its clearly broken of and been welded back on that has damaged the numbers so they have re done them . It wouldnt bother me .

Why on earth was that welded that way?
Surely the engine number section could have been welded from underneath without full penetration?
Funny how it would bother some people and not others. Iām in the āwould bother meā camp for what itās worth. Especially at that price.

Yes would bother me to a point I wouldn't buy. Shame as I think as a UK match no bike would be worth about Ā£2k more than advertised so seller taking a hit already.

Personal choice isn't it, if there is photographic evidence great, but a non matching numbers LC/YPVS, the engine has a chance of being dodgy at some point, even with pristine numbers, i think we get too hung up on this type of thing, just my two penneth worth mind. Andy.

Then you'd get someone saying they aren't original, and would also have to be stamped anyway! Can't win really, doesn't look a bad bike at face value.
