Hi Guys, I've had a few issues with the kick start sticking so thought I'd get it apart and see whats going on, I thought I'd change the Idler gear for one of the modified ones while it was all apart too. So yesterday I put the modified gear on and it seems to have more play than the old one , I assume I am right thinking the idea of this modified gear to go get rid of the play and reduce noise? Second problem, the gear on the rich starter has so much play, I think I should change it, but am I likely to find a second hand one that is any better? Phil

I’ve thought about wobbly idler gears before. I’ve rebushed some and they have still been loose. Wondered if the shaft it sits on also wears?
By modified ones, do you mean with the needle rollers.

Jon Hi Jon, yes the ones with needle roller, its worse it seems than the original but maybe you're right and the shaft wears too. A waste of £55 so it seems, but I'm now not sure whether to leave it installed or go back to the standard gear. Phil

Worth trying that I guess for that price, maybe I'll chance buying a used kickstart gear assembly and hope its better than mine, along with the new loop. Phil

I was chasing a noise on my build and thought it was around the kick start and changed the whole assembly for a spare which didn't solve it and ended up stripping the whole engine to start again !
But getting the clutch cover off and on is better than a total strip down but I wanted to look at the gearbox (found f##k all)

Jon Something certainly changes as I've had gears that go on one gearset easy enough but can't get it over the end of the shaft of another The output shaft is not cheap, hopefully I have a new one on the way Steve

Nova gear will sell you this product or used to (not too sure now as MBD has something to do with the LC parts). They would only sell it if you send them the shaft as well. This way they can produce the correct tolerances.
I think their service is a bit hit and miss but at least they know what they are doing and therefore you pay for it.

When people bought new bushings they ended up being more slack than the old ones as I guess some of those were not the right size.
It does make sense that the shaft wears as well, but Ive always felt that the idler was probably never meant to be totally perfect on the shaft. Changing the clip and washer parts helps as well of course and I always now try to use a new OEM idler gear. Buy them from the USA if its cheaper etc.
