If you're clever enough and have the correct qualifications and you want to go to university. you will get there. Or are they saying that is not the case? For some folks, its just not for them, and "its not for the likes of us" plays a huge part in that... well when I was that age it did. None of my mates wanted to get into a Uni! (unless to nick the lead) And my feelings about that establishment were cemented when Uni students used to push "Socialist Worker" under my nose just before entering work through the security gates... Told them to piss off and become a worker and a contributor to the country.

Uni then and now are 2 different things. Back in our school days only 2% of kids went to uni and jobs were available to the average kid based on their school results. Whereas today you need a degree to apply for all but the most menial jobs, and employers tend to want to give those jobs to shall we say 'new citizens' because they tend to complain less. This takes away the first rung of the employment ladder from those kids.
