Hi all
need recommendations for 'in-line' fuel filters, that fit and work to use on my 4LO to stop it sucking c**p from the tank through the carbs!
Many thanks Mouse

Hi Andrew, what about cleaning you tank out instead of filters. I cant recommend a filter. I fitted cheap filters once and it turned out to be an expensive mistake. They reacted with they fuel and collapsed.

There is or at least was.. a pretty good filter inbuilt to the petc**k. IF yours is fecked (likely) Then one of those plastic inline type see thru things with a pleated paper type element is pretty good at keeping rusty tank innards from entering the carbs. Proved crucial on my too old Beetle.

I use WD40, i have a 5 litre container of the stuff.
Empty out the fuel. Put a piece of rag in a funnel and filter the fuel through the rag.
Find a large flat tray for collecting the WD40. Remove the fuel tap and with the tank kilted with the fuel tap hole higher pour a liter or so of WD40 through the filling hole.
Swill the WD40 around and out the fuel tap hole.
Lay a rag in the funnel and pour the WD40 back into the tank, wipe the large flat tray clean after each swill.
Repeat the swilling process. Check the amount of debris that sits in the large flat tray every time you empty the tank and continue until its clean.
This usually doesn't take too long but you might be surprised how many rags you will go through when filtering the WD40 through the funnel. I have never gone into great detail to remove the last drops of WD40 from the tank. I just fill the tank back up with fuel afterwards. If the rust bug has got hold of your tank then flushing your tank out will only be effective for a few months, so maybe it would be better to repair the problem.

If it is rust then Deox C Steve Steve, thanks for this, yes i think it is just rust. Once you have used the 'Deox C' do you then put anything inside the tank to protect it or just put fuel in and away you go? Mouse

Mouse I usually just quickly rinse with water then dump half a can of wd40 in it and swill around to disperse any water Allow to dry then fill with fuel. I always put a small glug (about 30ml) in every full tank of fuel It should be enough to stop any future rust Steve
