Morning guys, pretty much got my 4lo ready for mot and now I have a problem with the clutch. The lever is working as it should although does feel a bit heavy. I've adjusted the lever and worm drive but the clutch doesn't engage with engine running or off. It's had both side engine casings off by the previous owner to be powder coated. I've had the left one off and the clutch mechanism seems to be working as it should but thought I'd ask before draining it all down to take the other side off. The only thing worth mentioning is that a 31k o/s engine casing is fitted but not sure this would make any difference to the clutch operation. Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated. Cheers Gee

Take the left case off first and see if the clutch engages to rule out the mechanism

Thanks

How long has it been lying?
Had a few that the clutch binds if left a while
Start the bike while sitting on it ideally on a slope.
Roll it down the slope and slip it into second then get it into third
While riding pull in the clutch and give it some throttle to see if it breaks free
This is assuming the lever feels ok, has the correct free play and has resistance on the lever

You have two ball bearings. There is one in the clutch adjusting mechanism and the other in the engine which Rob mentions.

I’m glad someone has mentioned the 2 ball set up, I fitted one in my adjuster to get mine operating correctly but when I looked at the assembly drawing it only shows the one in the basket/engine side ?? 95DEEC49-8B77-411E-B5FB-FE18EFC52D45 by

Just simply sounds like the plates are stuck. Clutch probably working but the plate stack has ‘weathered’ ...I mean unless you know for 100% certain it has run recently, then it could have been sat for many years, 5,10,15 who knows! Action really depends on how long ago it was apart ....really speaking, going into the right hand side would be prudent .. check with the previous owner what he did whilst the case was off ...maybe nothing? And new oil or old ?
Otherwise , if was free a few weeks ago....then front wheel against a wall, idle in neutral , clutch in, then clonk it into first .....worst case it will stall, if you are lucky it will free off.

The other ball is inside the actuator itself, and not a separate part. Most of these actuators are gummed up with crud - if you were to wash them in petrol you will hear the ball rattling about inside. Dusty

Thanks guys, as its absolutely lashing it down I'll go and check the push rod measurements for starters. If the clutch end ball does happen to be missing anyone know the size I need to get? Also could I remove the shaft and pop the ball in or does it need to be done from the clutch side? Thanks Gee

I'll measure the shaft first and go from there. Thanks

Just under 8mm looking at a previous thread , just checked and I ordered 7.5 mm for when I needed one, not sure about pulling Rod and fitting from that side, would imagine you will be able to though .

My clutch is all new (norbos oversize plates) it stick overnight i always have to put it in gear and rock it back and forth after that it’s perfect smooth no slip With the case off (pv motor)you pull the clutch the pressure plate moves but the fibres stick together I don’t know why

Different oil and plate combinations may cause the sticking issue.

Ive changed the oil to a different type still the same but as it fine after its unstuck i can live with it theres no slip or drag and its quite light with standard springs and cable

My grey hybrid is the same. It's had 2 different complete clutch assemblies, was the same before and after another engine rebuild (everything checked and renewed if necessary).
It's also been tried with every different type of oil available as well. We have another LC that everything looks identical, same gearbox oil and it never sticks however long it's left.
My sticks a little even if left for several hours.
Before I start it, I just put it in gear, hold the clutch in and rock it back and forth a few times and it releases fairly easy.
I've decided that it's character lol

I used to have the sticking clutch plate issue when using Norbo's power plates and ATF in the gearbox.
Not had an issue since started using EBC DRC043 clutch kit with Comma Eurolite Oil.
