My LC was first registered 1/1/1981... Can I apply for historic tax in January 2021. DVLA website seems to suggest I have to wait till April 2022... But surely it's 40 years old next month..... Any ideas ??

Think it’s the year after it’s 40th birthday.

I’ve done my XT 500 this year and I’m still a bit confused. It was first registered in December 1979. So this last January it didn’t need an mot according to the dvla website but still needed to be taxed. But because of covid I sorned it. Then a few months ago (September) I wandered down to the post office with my log book and Form v112 and asked to tax it. The lady wasn’t interested in the v112. She just scanned the v5 and handed it back with a receipt showing £0 and 12 months tax. Then about a month ago a new v5 arrived. Strange though that if I go in the vehicle checker it flags up red on the mot. I guess the systems aren’t talking to each other. My lc will be 40 in March 21 so I’m not expecting free tax until 2022 but I may not need an mot?

Then there is the dilemma of having no MOT but still need something like a certificate of road worthiness or whatever it's called to keep the insurance people satisfied !

You can still get an mot for peace of mind. But all this means is that your vehicle was roadworthy on 1 day out of 365. Your still obliged to keep it roadworthy every time you take it out. As far as insurance or recovery companies go. If it’s not required to have an mot but is roadworthy then there won’t be a problem. Same as new cars under 3 years old. IMO.

Good points you make there, I certainly don't plan on keep taking my LC for an MOT or paying for road tax when it's 40 plus years old. I do wonder what the on line database will show though, if it's 'Expired' won't that result in being stopped by plod?

I am sure the bike has to be in its 41st year before it is historic.

Every vehicle in that year has to over 40 so it's the year after
Probably so plod knows all V reg vehicles should be excempt

Hi, My LC is of 1980 vintage and turned 40 this year. I spoke to the insurance company and the MOT inspector a few months back, I decided that I will still be taking mine for a voluntary MOT in the future. Steven. ps:- and yes, my findings were, you have to wait till its in its 41st year before the tax thing comes into play. rdlccrazy.proboards.com/thread/52528/insurance-mot

I spoke to DVLA...... My bike was first registered 1/1/81 according to logbook... I can apply for historic tax from April 2021.... I think if it was registered after 8/1/81 I would have to wait another year..... Think this is correct, but it's all so confusing

Think it runs April to April. My Rd400 was new October 1979 so I had to wait until April 1 this year but I would have thought if your bike was registered in January it would qualify next April.

My XT500 was first registered in 1979 but was a 1978 model. I wanted it re-classed as an Historic Vehicle last year so got a dating certificate from the VJMC. They confirmed that it was a 1978 model but was in fact manufactured in October 1977. The DVLA rules state that to qualify as an Historic Vehicle it must be either first registered or manufactured more than 40 years ago. A 1980 bike manufactured in 1979 would qualify now.

This is as interesting as it is confusing to me. I've had a German imported 350lc for a few months now, just about finished a few jobs to get it ready for mot and 1st registration. Got the German logbook and it was 1st registered on 16th July 1980. I need to mot it and send £55 registration fee and £44 Road tax fee to register it. Question is, do I need to pay for the road tax and does it need a mot? To be honest I want to mot it for peace of mind and it also does put it into the system and record mileage. But.... pay for road tax 😩 not if I can help it, but also don't want to delay the registration process. Anyone any similar experience of registering something of this age? Cheers Gee
