Just picked up a German import 4lo last night and obviously need to register it with dvla. I have the German logbook and it's 1st registered June 1980 which makes it over 40 years old and MOT exempt. Anyone had this and know if it still needs to be mot'd? I will get it done anyway but wondered if I can start the registration process straight away. Will also need a few parts so will post on the wanted thread when I know what I need. Thanks Gee

Think it will be 2021 before that is MOT excempt
All 1980 bikes have to be over 40 years

Worth a try maybe I assumed being over 40 years by DVLA standards would be similar to the historic tax class rules The other thing with the mot excemption is that it says they can't have significant modifications within 30 years but then says "except motorcycles" so no rules on that at this time 😀 Steve

I thought even if a import is over the 40 year rule you still require a mot for the initial registration process as it proves to the DVLA the actual bike exists, then once you get the log book back and the bike has its 41st birthday you can then apply for historical vehicles
But I may be wrong☹️

Just filled in a v112 excemption form and they registered it no probs Steve

Looks like I'm going to have to look into this a bit further. Guess it will be a nightmare to get an answer out of dvla.

Well I've just learnt something. Had a look at the v112 form online and didn't know you had to fill it out to tax your vehicle. I've also got a 1970 Lambretta, just insured it and used it, didn't mot or tax it. Looks like I should have. Doh! 😂

You haven’t mentioned nova , was the nova already done when the importer brought the bike in? If not , that’s the first thing to do ASAP.

Should have a nova reference number if it’s been done already

When you register the bike do dvla send all the original documentation back?

When you register the bike do dvla send all the original documentation back? They will send you ID and proof of address along with any receipts etc but not the old reg doc if you have one so best photo copy it before sending. Steve

Steve Cheers Steve, Shame that cos it would be nice to keep it with the bike. It's a 2 owner registered in June 1980 with a frame number just less than 3000 so really early bike. Gee

Who does dating certificates?

Who does dating certificates? If you decide to use a dating certificate make sure to send a covering letter stating why you do not have the original reg docs otherwise your registration request is likely to be refused, ask me how I know Paul Dawkins can supply a dating certificate via his website. www.motorbikeregistrations.co.uk/OEB

I sent one in with the Austrian documents that had everything on them, Yamaha issued from new with the exact date of first registration and all the old keepers names etc all Austrian Gov stamped, I really, really didn't want to part with it but I needed to get it registered , idiots at Dvla sent it back ,saying I needed proof of first registration in English FFS,so I got a dating letter from Paul Dawkins, got it registered and got to keep the Austrian log book which was a bonus, only thing is they put RD350r on the uk log book and its a 1983 31k but I can't be arsed to change it.

That is hilarious I've sent in German, Swiss and Austrian and all were fine in non English I really think either half of them don't have a clue or they have to reject so many first time for any ridiculous reason Another one of mine said I hadn't shown proof of ownership despite sending the VAT receipt from the importer. Only when I sent the card receipt to prove I actually paid for it kept them happy Steve

Gee First registered June 1980? The UK didn't get its first shipment of 4L0 until August 1980. Did Germany get theirs earlier? The UK only had 4L1 (250LC) in June 1980.

I'm not sure but that's what it says on the German logbook, I'm not at home now but I think it is 5th June 1980. Matching numbers 4l00029**

My 4L0 (registered August 1980) had engine/frame numbers 4L00031**, so that tallies. Really annoyed if the Hun got the 350 LC earlier than us...
