Hi all I thought I better make a start to some progress pics and ideas. My plans for this one are to make all mods reversible. That way if I have a change of heart, I can always go back. I picked this up a few weeks ago, and seeing as things are slow here in Melbourne it’s time to get started collecting. It’s a good honest old girl and seems to be pretty complete and correct. But I’m no expert So far I’ve mocked up a cbr1000 front end Got a R6 shock in the post and managed to sort out fitting an R1-Z rear wheel and breaks to the standard swing arm.

Wow, thats something different! I cant think of any other bike Ive seen built with that combo. You may need to raise those bars to fit the fairing? worth a check on the dry build. Solid progress tho.

I’m not sure why more haven’t been done this way Jon Maybe there is a trap I’m falling into? Also cannot find a FZ600 swing arm anywhere. Would love a banana arm but a good one is hard to find at realistic money. The rear wheel swap is really simple The axle size is the same. So it was just a matter of machining up to spacers at work to get the rim in the middle of the swing arm. Standard Rear sprockets bolt to the Cush drive keeping this simple. For the caliper mount I just need to turn up a bung and weld to the swing arm. As for the front end. It’s off a 2004 CBR1000R So far in the mock up everything looks like it’s going to work All balls do a bearing set that I’m planning to get fitted over the weekend. As for the bar height. I’m not sure whether I’ll put the fairing back on or not. Once I have the rear shock in and the height set. I’ll be able to work out the bar height. Maybe even some Mx bars?

The FZ arm wasnt really a thing for us in Aus, we dont seem to have many FZ parts here like say the USA.
The RGV arms are easy to do, but again hard to find. I know where you can find some in Melbourne if you want some, have a look for RGV Spares who is a guy called Deet. Hes a great guy and sold me all sorts of parts for RGVs over the years if you do ever want to go that route. He has other bikes and other spares as well, not just RGV.
Amazed how easy the R1Z wheel was, but Ive never seen one come up for sale, so well done getting one.
Bars are interesting, there was a post on here within the last year when someone put risers on and straight bars.

The R1Z is left overs from a couple of LC builds. Unfortunately my garage burnt to the ground due to a battery charger fault. So that ended the lc builds quite a few years ago. I thought they where they same as Fzr250 and TZr??? Still got a R1Z front end somewhere.
I might try and find this RGV spares guy as I would really love a banana arm Thanks Jon

Oh no! thats a terrible story if you do go the rgv route, download these before the site is switched off (I havent paid the bill): www.2smoked.com/RGVonYPVS%20plans.pdfThe other option is to buy a kit from NK in the UK to fit it, thats a much simpler/quicker way and what I did in the end lol Deet is often slow to reply, but a few Melb guys on here know him so may be able to help with contact details etc. Deet is a nice guy and helpful when you do get him tho.

Thanks Jon Ne I get the connection Been getting a lot of info from your site Thanks for all the hard work and sharing Valuable info I run a pretty well set up CNC Engineering shop, so making all these parts will be a walk in the park now I have access to your hard work

No worries. The plans were not mine, I just rehosted them when they were lost off another site. They are quite old but I believe they are 99% of what NK offers. I didnt check the parts I bought from him against it but it felt right when i read them.
no worries, its all coming to an end tho. I dont want to spend the time on it anymore, my web builder software died and the bill was due - it was 'time'. lol
Cool... you might want to keep that quiet or I'll be asking for all sorts! haha.

Thought I better put up a bit of an update. Parts are taking sooo long to get here. Finally got the cases back from blast and hardware back from replating. Big thanks to Alan @ The hydroblast shop in Melbourne. For all you Aussies out there his work is amazing. Few more little bits to get and the 421 will be complete.

Been a while since I’ve posted a project update. Finally a box arrived today that I’ve been waiting on for ages. Carbs, reeds cables and manifold. Getting closer to finally hearing it run.

After test fitting all this tonight, the filters don’t fit so well. This is what was supplied but, after looking up the part number they are a 62mm flange. The back of the 34mm PJ’s is only 58mm

The back of the 34mm PJ’s is only 58mm Hmm, thats not good. Same supplier? FWIW... many people have had trouble with hard ended filters. My bike ran fine with mine, but Ive changed to soft ram airs now, mostly as the hard sided K&Ns touched the LC frame, but also to not have an issue with the ends later. This might be a good time to send those K&Ns back and go for a foam filter.

A few other bits and pieces ticked off the list. Wheels refinished and brakes systems rebuilt Have you split your tank down the seam? Or just cut next to it? I'm considering doing this to the couple of early RZ tanks I have here and wondered about your process.

I’m reusing the base for a custom tank. Needs to be narrower to match the new seat unit and will be a different. Shape

Basically told me it wasn’t an issue and wouldn’t do anything about it.

Interesting work on the tank, keen to see how that pans out. Great if you can TIG yourself, sadly I lack that skill and fear the expense of asking a pro to do it lol
Sorry to hear that, Ive always found him to be really helpful. Im nots sure if i put the ramair info up here in my build thread or not, hmm.

Thanks Jon Quick question with the iggy install. The three wire from the stator red, brown and green need to be earthed. Mine is red with white trace. I think it’s the red one everyone refers to? I’ve asked Dave and he says he’s never seen red with white trace. Could this be an Australian bike difference?

red with white trace is the 85's kill switch, usually (other years) its black/white. All F1s have this dont they, its a one year thing, Dave has defo seen this...? if you wire that to earth the bike wont spark. Ive never fitted an Iggy so not sure about exact wiring for those, i dont know what youre trying to earth... Tho, I think you might want the white with red and white with green? maybe youre reading the colours wrong... trace is the colour on the the trigger wiring etc. Have a look at the wiring diagram in this PDF on Xavier's site (Xavier, you havent linked this in the workshop documents for DL area that i can see mate, its only in the news section and technical) rd350lc.net/1985%20RD350-RD350F%20(57V-SE1)%20Service%20Manualcomp.pdf

Nice build
As Jon said the red with white trace is the kill switch wire on a 57v/51l
The red (May be red/white as per the kill switch as this is the coil it grounds to kill the ignition), brown and green are the 3 wires coming up from the stator. These need joined together and connected to ground as the hi and low speed windings are not used on an Iggy
It stops them getting large no load voltages on them and potentially damaging them

It’s been a long time since I managed to post anything for this build. Looking back it’s come a long way. Finally got to fire her up today and test all the wiring was correct before finally cleaning it all up. Pretty happy with the sound

Two fuel tanks later and some major rust repairs to the second tank. I finally got some bit back from the painter. Now the hard part. To chose a colour scheme

This build is a huge inspiration to me as I have one on the back burner that I hope will turn out like this beauty. Those pipes really fit the build and look just perfect, you didn’t mention what they are? here is mine and I hope it looks half as good as yours when it is done next year I know it’s a long way off but I really hope it can look like yours when it’s done. I can’t wait to see the paint scheme, very well done congrats
