At the start of this Covid thing I do remember something mentioned about MOTs.
I thought it was just they were not bothering with MOTs that had run out for a 6th month period.
I’ve just done a vehicle check on my 2 RDs on the road to see when the MOT runs out as I thought it was last month, and they seem to have automatically added 6 months to both?

Yes that's what they have done
Remember checking for when my wife's car tax would run out
Racked my brain for 2 days as couldn't understand why a car registered in March (I did forget one year and it moved to June) would have been mot'd in December
The penny eventually dropped 🙄

May be because of the backlog of mot's that will need doing?

Talking to my brother in law about this, and he made a good point.
He thinks the reason they have done it is because technically without an MOT your not insured.

some insurance companies are refusing to accept the 6 mnth extention if a claim is made, just like some wont accept a vehicle been mot exempt. they consider it as "no proof that the vehicle is in roadworthy condition"

Insurance companies don't have a leg to stand on considering dvla say it has got one. It's just a bit longer than normal
If you consider a car under 3 years old has "no mot" either
They would have to prove 1) that is unroadworthy and 2) you knew about it
The historic vehicle is another thing altogether but considering most are on classic policies and they know how old it is they either need to suck it up and pay or not hide behind an excuse or some small print
Don't know about you guys but it's in big writing on my schedule warning about garage cover and any other restrictions or policy stipulations
If they won't pay if it legally has no mot then it needs to be in big writing there

Needs to be over so a 1980 will be 2021 I think

Anyone know if the tax exempt at 40 years old applies to imports registered with relevant age plates too?
Mine is an 81 plate but imported on the reg document in 2012 so wondering if the exemption will apply next year to mine?
Thanks Nick

My Suzuki LJ will be tax and MOT free next year. Just as well as it's on a SORN right now. The little Yaris is having an MOT on Monday. Fingers crossed but I can't find one fault with her so...

Just done my vfr and given away a bit, partly as want it sold but as it’s not impossible that there could be another lockdown or regional, want my bikes ready to go, got caught out with one at lockdown. Giving away a part of £30 for a year is nothing, the extension is legal but if it came to splitting hairs, takes away the possibility.

Asking as I have a 1974 RD250 on the way to me from Poland.

Defo manufacture date and not reg date or plate. Back in the late 90s I had a 1972 Alfa with later registration and got the exemption with manufacture evidence etc. The year also meant i could run black plates, even tho the car was imported in the mid 70s and got the then current plate, M reg. All good but the local cops took a while to cotton on that its the car age not the reg plate that sets the rules. We got there in the end lol.

Hi, Interesting thread. Will we still need an MOT for our LC,s when they are 40 years old ? Has anyones LC turned 40 yet ? Mine is 40 next month. Steven. Likewise mine. First registered 8th August 1980 - been off the road since 1989. I'm aiming for 8th August 2020 as 'back on the road' day...
If there are any very early 250LCs they could well be over 40 by now, as they arrived 2 or 3 months earlier than the 350s, I seem to remember.

I don't think yours will qualify for Historic classification until Jan 2021.
