In process of rebuilding a few Shindaiwa Lawn trimmers. T230 and T242 ( from son's yardening/landscaping sideline business). Been disassembling and repressing Cranks, fitting fresh rod needles bearings (on Both ends) and Rings. Looking at the wee pistons I thought they looked of Familiar detail design. Sure enough ART brand in the inner castings same as OEM yama ones. Clearly Art was in business at least until 2010. This on the earlier T230 machines up till 2010 ? Later versions T242 (Echo bought Shindaiwa about then) are Markedly/visibly less good. Cost cuttings everywhere from the Cranks, Rods, pistons Even Cyls, which went from Chrome plated ali bores to Steel liner versions. Cranks and rods are simply..lesser. No more copper plated rods. Still.. the crank bits interchange(mostly), but new bits are Wayyy easier to unpress /repress. Just like non OEM Yama crankshafts, there is no extra quality in them, definitely not intended to be rebuild friendly. Moderne times.

The only reason there is so much Chinese product is that it’s cheap. It has its place but it’s a sort of false positive. Admittedly things can work out ok, my present mower gets an oil change if I feel like it and not every season but seems to soldier on and is it really any worse the the old Brit stuff. It seems the house is full of crap at times, quite often when we want something there isn’t much choice, how much of it though is British companies who’s only aim is to make a fast buck or sorry, quid. The name Echo to me is budget, I had an Echo chain saw 40 odd years ago and was only good for light occasional use before it got reluctant to start then discarded. Buy Stihl or Husqvarna if you want it to last, they are more stealable though. Even inanimate objects though are crap.

Totally agree, its almost impossible to avoid Chinese components now, and a high percentage of it is just not fit for purpose, its so frustrating that the modern world excepts this crap and proper manufacturers have had to close because their costs are higher because they make the products properly with correct materials and tolerances .I could bang on about my hate of Chinese manufacturing all day, they are progressively de-engineering the world.

Aye, nothing really built to last anymore is there, guess that the heads of these companies actually want it like that anyhow, keeps folk coming back/spending money. I'll still keep/repair stuff whenever possible, owning a lathe, milling machine, welder etc certainly helps with that.

I increasingly try to buy antique items for indoors, especially furniture, most of it isn’t fashionable so therefore cheap. I think I paid about £50 for a huge wardrobe and 2 chests of draws in oak. The previous owners had added glass plate to drawer tops that would cost a fair bit alone.
