Search on here says some are left hand thread, and some are held by a set screw.
Bike is an early JDM 4U0.
Knob is sheared off at the shaft. No set screw to be seen. Plenty of meat to grab on and spin clockwise til my arm gets tired, but it appears to be stuck fast.
Any tips?

You have to try and get a small screwdriver down the shaft of the knob (oooeerr) to stop it turning, whilst you turn the trip anti CW as you say. One of mine was a right pain, and so tight I thought I was going to break the speedo. If the clocks are apart, could you cut the plastic off?

Could only get mine off after I opened the clock up and held the metal shaft with pliers while turning the knob.

Remove the rubber grommet, if not already removed, you will need a small screwdriver or similar, bent at 90• at the tip, slide it past the remains of the tripknob, and lift to apply pressure on the shaft, that should then let you unscrew the plastic knob.

Is it not a reverse thread so you are actually tightening it when resetting
