I have to finally admit that I am getting old... I'm sure I have a photo of this and I've done a bunch of these before and yet... well... Ive no idea where these springs go. Anyone know for sure? Neither of my 2 examples below seem to be useful lol

According to my memory it's pic 1
Seem to remember when you undo the screws it springs up
Also in pic 2 the springs would stop the cap unlocking

I agree pic 2 looks and feels wrong as the space is too big and they could turn round. pic1 seems more logical as the hole is the right size etc
The whole 'turret' springs up when you undo the screws... and I cant see how these springs 'help' anything. hmm...

I think it's just to put some tension on them to stop them chattering with vibration
Everything in the cap mechanism is a bit loose as you can't exactly grease it for lubrication
That's my take on it anyway

Is this a 4LO cap for a start? Not that I know if the caps on the following models were that different internally??
There is some vertical spring tension felt in mine, I'm guessing that it's to help seal the rubber against the lip of the tank.

No real idea what its off as its a 'center lock' cap, not LC offset, so Im going to say its a YPVS cap.
I believe the vertical tension is from the main spring in the larger domed piece that sits under this plate.

Jon, its as in the first picture, just took one to bits to check (YPVS fuel cap) the spring sits in the hole and presses against the metal cover shown.

I'm glad you put this up Jon
Bizarrely a set of those just turned up in a bag of parts delivered to me today, still in its bag along with a key
Just the springs slides and plate
