I’d just polish the lacquer off.

Polish it off using what? I don’t want to make it worse as I’ve only seen one for sale and it was £80 on eBay

When I say polish, I don’t mean by hand. Something like this on a variable speed angle grinder: www.machinemart.co.uk/p/m14-soft-red-finishing-foam/I’ve used all sorts of fine polishing abrasive over the years with good results. Farecla G10 is good, but I’ve also used CIF LOL. Jon
