What is the best way of protecting the gasket faces, bolt faces etc on the heads and barrels etc etc before painting.
And what is the best paint for the job

Masking tape! Take your time putting it on and shaping it.
I usually paint and cure with Plastikote BBQ paint but I'm told the new formulae isn't up to the job so I'm interested in replies too.

I used some Wurth paint, got it from yambits, it says Matt finish but is more satin, not petrol proof

I used Plastikote BBQ paint too but keep petrol away from it , just put an old towel under the fuel tap when getting it on and off
Had it on the cam cover of the Bonneville for about 4 years and has been very durable
I masked off using normal masking tape and cardboard to go over the larger areas with just the tape on the edges

I tend to use vht barrel paint satin black with the grey vht primer
If gloss I paint the head with simoniz or hycote gloss black and for the barrels I use halfords brush engine enamel. Easy to stipple on the surface and easy to clean off any you get on the gasket surfaces with a Stanley blade while soft

PJ1 Engine Case paint in satin.
Bake in the oven at 200f for an hour and it's petrol proof(ish).

I've painted mine with some Simoniz Tough Black. It went on well, 24hr cure, I'll let you all know what it's like.
