I do usually soak the clutch plates before fitting but was thinking of putting them in dry then filling the gearbox and they will get sorted that way ?
It won't be running for a while so plenty of time to suck it up ?

Won't fully soak in as the oil level only covers the lower portion of the clutch ..... best to leave overnight before fitting in the oil of your choice.

I would turn the engine over slowly over a few days while holding in the clutch lever

Soak them. Oil won't penetrate if they are together in the clutch basket.

If you are already build them in, you can run it in neutral while pulling the clutch. That will give oil between the plates.

Ive built a few different engines where i have just covered the plates in oil and then fitted them. i also have to say the engines have been started up shortly after. i wouldn't fit them dry, the oil might not get evenly distributed over the plates.

I'm in the same predicament.
I was thinking I'd leave the plates out and fit them only after soaking them for 48 hours prior to starting the bike once built....

Surely that would do it ?

If i pull my clutch i can see gaps between some of the plates. Oil can easily absorp between the plates. If you rotate it by hand it will take some time to wet them all. If you run it in neutral with a pulled clutch it will be a lot faster.

I wonder what the main dealers do? I can't imagine that they soak plates for hours/over night, time is money you know.lol

Oh FFS Martin, what's yer problem soaking them πππ
If it's the mess then soak them over night then wipe with a rag before fitting. That way the plates will have absorbed some oil

Wait for thread titled "Why have my clutch plates worn out so quick " Lol Or cracked I've stripped a few ypvs engines that have been laid up for a long then used The bit of plate in the oil stays wet and saturated. The bit out the oil dries out When inspected the plates are in 3 or 4 pieces Steve

I'm going to throw another angle into this. What if you have a rebuilt engine, which you pre soaked the plates in but are not going to use for a good few months? Should you fill it with gear oil so the plates don't dry out?

Nah, oil doesn't dry out
I know what you mean but the friction material will be saturated
