Hi guys looking for a little advice, I’m building a bike to run in our local beach races it’s a ex road race 350LC frame, RZ250 51L engine with locked open power valves. I have done a basic wiring job for the CDI and planning on running a small battery just to power temp gauge. The stator is original no mods so my question is would it be ok to leave the charging side totally disconnected with out it doing any damage to the stator? I’m guessing yes as there won’t be a Reg etc attached. Reason for asking is when the engine isn’t in the beach racer it will be used in a “Sidewinder” off road buggy which has the charging set up for lights and will also be reconnecting the power valves while on the buggy. Sorry if pic won’t show bit new to this adding pic stuff www.flickr.com/gp/183139465@N03/ghmN3D

I posted a sketch for such a system I used for a track bike. The three white wire's can be blanked and the black wire from the generator was earthed. I can't link the drawing at the moment.
Good luck with the sprint races. I have done something similar. You really need to get over the front of these bikes to help keep the front wheel down.😁

Awesome thanks for that, I thought as the reg won’t be attached it wouldn’t be a problem. Yes could be interesting racing along the sand with big knobbly rear tire. The track is 400 meter straights with a cone at each end so pretty much get around the cone as fast as you can then wide open throttle till the cone at other end then repeat Should be eligible for classic class which is mostly old dirt bikes and a couple old English road bikes that have been converted may have a go at 250 class to and that’s mostly newer motocross bikes.

Usually if no using generator coils you have to link them all together then connect to ground to stop frying them
If no load on open coils you can get some really high voltages and the coil insulation breaks down

The circuit diagram I used is halfway down the second page on the thread Tips and advice for putting an RD on the track. The coils are still good. Best check if it's the same as what you are doing. No battery was used.
I have heard the same advice Steve mentioned and I have got the coils earthed on another bike but this one is using an ignitech and a battery.
This year I missed the Dirt Sprint in Holland but I did hear that people were surprised by the RD's because sometimes they were wheelieing and spinning the back wheel at the same time. The track ended up getting muddy which was a disadvantage for the RDs.

Your setup is pretty much want I was thinking so will go with that and hopefully the coils will be ok. Looking forward to giving the beach races a go and see how it goes against the old Triumphs which seem to be the ones to beat in the classics.
