New to the RD500 ownership world. Ridden mine a few times and of course I love it. Just wondering if it's set up correctly. Mine pulls like a train in 1st 2nd and 3rd from 4k ish up to about 10k then has nothing. Never grinned so much on a bike Does that sound about right for a standard engine?

You can get it checked on a dyno with a gas analyser. Where are you based?

In standard form they do not overly rev they do drop off around 9.5k so sounds about right, will rev more with after market pipes and some tuning if that's what you want. Do a compression test to check all okay and check carbs are properly synched.

Older 2 strokes never really reved beyond 10k. RG500s are safe to 10,500, Think back to the older GT750 and it was redlined at 8,500 IIRC. These thing do need treating with some mechanical sympathy not like some rev crazy 4T 4 pot thingy that needs 12,000 rpm before they start making proper power.
Enjoy it for what it is, a 35 year old design. Plus the faster you go the more you realise how cr@p the brake are and how rubbish the frame and suspension is !!!!

Are you saying it doesnt rev out in 5th or 6th but only in the lower gears? 6th is very tall anyway. As said, a dyno is the only sure fire way to be sure, sounds like you haven't any evidence of recent spanner work so would be worth getting it checked out.

Hi,
My 1984 47x model revs out in all the gears - takes a while in 6th gear - not something I do nowadays though ! ๐
Cheers Paul

It should rev out in all gears. Do a compression check to make sure itโs all good. A good set of pipes really let the 500 breathe.

From memory dry weight was the wrong side of 200kg , a good one should see 65-70rwhp just enjoy the experience of owning 4cylinder 2stroke

I didn't get to 5th and 6th much but imagine they are similar. It's been well sorted engine and carbs... and it's a special so had decent suspension and brakes should I need it I have little to compare it to so just asking not moaning about it.

Search for Regis Laconi YZR500 RD500 and you'll find it. It's been upgraded to a Garry McCoy rep now

Just did the VMCC at Mallory Park - with everything standard except TSA pipes and jetting my RD500 1GE was revving past an indicated 12000rpm in the lower gears - not that I intentionally did that of course - even trying to be careful it was going to 11000rpm very rapidly - anyway the bike is off to Dave at Muttsnuts for an Ignitech CDI/YPVS to be fitted and set up - Iโve asked him to set a safe rpm limit to prevent any future engine damage ๐
Sadly my bike had a front tyre issue at Mallory that stopped me enjoying the handling - still a great couple of days though.
