Been over 30 years since I last moved a 4LO tail light a little bit more inboard...what’s the advice on the best way to do it?...from memory I just cut the original rear mount out and made some L brackets.

You can get an adjustable tail unit now, does the light/numberplate mount all in one.

Get a RD125LC one and save yours. Tiny bit of trimming and it bolts straight on and recesses the light. About £15 on eBay.

Definitely save your original, fetch over £100. Either of the 2 above options will save you.

The downsides of doing such a mod, lose space to keep tool kit etc and won't you have a problem when it comes MOT time due to the number plate not being illuminated??

There are a bunch of brackets available to do this, even OEB did one for us in stainless a while back.
Like everyone says, I'd not muller a good original :/
