Hello all I'm after a general purpose Commuter bike. I only work two miles from work but every month I travel 40 mile round trip again for work the criteria are below.
I don't want to use my beloved Elsie particularly in bad weather I was thinking of a BMW F650CS but I'm open to anything.
Reliable Not to big 650 max Easy to maintain Doesn't mind being a little neglected To use in all weathers.

Old Fazer or Bandit 600. Run forever with the odd oil change. Never need cleaning.
Or my favourite commuter, Burgman 400. Don't scoff, surprisingly quick, loads of luggage space & great weatherproofing.
My Mrs had one, I loved riding it. Easy to service, but a lot of plastic to remove if owt breaks. She had a 250 then a 400 nothing much broke on either in many years of ownership.

Honda Deauville 650, shaft drive, built in storage and a bit of a fairing to help keep the weather off you, basic V twin engine, pretty bullet prof really.

Consider electric with these short distances. Ebike doesnt need to warm up and virtuali no maintainance. There are loads of small e scoots in NL. They are almost for free. They only need a new battery.

They only need a new battery. That's a possibility but the 40 mile round trip would be a struggle though, plus it's on a duel carriage way for half the journey and I wouldn't feel safe !

The cheapest. A CG125 will do 150mpg, 60mph and looks like shite new or 20 years old

not in any particular order
MT 07 yamaha
Had a Deauville 700 its a tractor just keeps on going, very very comfortable and roomy to ride, even for a pillion, its a better bike than the 650 version,Comes with built in panniers, pretty much a full screen, can take a top box too
or a Transalp 650, getting long in the tooth now but easy to ride too
the Honda CB500 is a good little bike or even the NC700, runs on the smell of an oily rag 13L tank does 600 + km, comfy too my mate has one and loves it, cheap as well

Both models can be had for little money now though.

Another thing that you may need to consider is the emissions? Depending on where you want to ride said bike, look at the London area for example.
