The 4L0 was the original loop scoot....that’s all there is to it. Puts it up there on a pedestal. I bought my first 4L0 to go racing as my AC RD350 was made to look stationary in comparison. The 500 and 250 GP was fully televised at the time and everybody watched it. The TT had an F2 category where a spondon LC or similar was the tool to have, and not slow.
As we get old and increasingly feel less connected to the present the inevitable nostalgia and memories of the past become the ‘mind space’ where we fell most at home.
I have to say though that the top spot is highly contested... the 4L1 is the sweetest of all the engines and gives you a sense of willingness to please whilst the 350ypvs can keep with the big stuff effortlessly. It’s just the 4L0 is the hooligan, not particularly well behaved and with plenty of bad attitude, but once you pin the throttle wide open at 6K, you just question who on earth sanctioned what happens next to be used on the road by folks who just put there L plates in the bin....’it’s only a 350 dad’....
