To be honest I'm wondering how long my LC and TDR will last because they're both hooligan bikes and I'm not much of a hooligan anymore. I got done for speeding on my LC in 2017 and got 6 points and a grand fine, that slowed me right down and I just don't enjoy it so much anymore, constantly watching the speedo and expecting a copper around every corner with a speed gun.
I've got an old 500cc classic bike that does 60mph flat out, it's a lovely old thing to ride and I can relax on it, so I'm sure there will come a time when the two strokes have to go, it's not 1985 anymore and the roads aren't the place to hoon around on hooligan bikes anymore.
Anyone else feel the same?

How fast were you going ? That’s a hefty fine My guess is it was after April 2017, he was doing 21+MPH over, and he earns £35k a year? Jon

i empathise with you on that. its not just the fine and points, its possibly your job, future insurance payments and even jail if you get carried away. i bought a kh100 a couple of years ago and its flat out at 60 so i can get the feeling of thrashing a 2 stroke with less risk of being caught for speeding.

Why can't you just go easy on the throttle most of the time?
I'm happy to bimble about on mine, I still enjoy it, brings back memories and makes me feel young again.
When on an A road etc, sure I hit the power band etc but she is an old girl after all so I'm trying to make her last longer too.

How fast were you going ? That’s a hefty fine 28mph over the speed limit on a road out in the countryside where the limit had recently been reduced - which made the difference between 18mph over and 28mph over. I was speeding, so I can't really cry about it but I was on an empty road at about 10am on a Monday morning, I just didn't notice the camera van parked up. The fine is relative to salary, the magistrates looked at my profession and my circumstances and gave me the maximum. I wasn't that bothered about the money, it was more about a ban and the repercussions, it certainly put a downer on my enjoyment of these types of motorcycles.

I hear you Icarus, some bikes just make you ride like a hooligan (it wasn't me officer, honest) and others don't. I had a Hypermotard for nearly 7yrs that I totally adored but no matter how i tried I always always rode it like an absolute prick. I'd get it out and leave it booming away (the neighbours hated it) to warm up and use to tell myself "right, let's just have a steady ride out today" and then within 15mins I'd be raggin' it everywhere possible. It was if the throttle was an on/off switch, I'd try to slide into roundabouts etc. whenever possible and having 2 wheels on the floor seemed like a very bad thing indeed. Why ?, I have no fu*kin' idea other than it made my balls tingle I guess. The light bulb moment was after an early morning thrash in which I'd had 2 very near misses that were both completely down to a car driver's inability to pay attention to what they were doing or how to make allowances when a hooligan was approaching. So after 45+yrs of riding & getting away with being a hooligan on numerous bikes I'd owned the time had come to at least try and save my licence or possibly my life, the Hyper had to go. I'd just reached 60 when I sadly sold it and yes i should have know better by then but there was something about that bike (and other's I've owned) that made me no more responsible than when I got my 1st "real bike" an RD250 in 1974, which i crashed in 99 miles of ownership btw 🙄. I currently have 4 other bikes all of which are very well behaved, well, most of the time anyway. One is a rather boring but comfy & useful Honda VFR X Cross Dresser which can be fun too if pushed that was purposely chosen over the Tracer 900 which i preferred tbh but it had the same effect as the Hyper. The others are old 2 strokes that for some reason this time around get treated very kindly, go figure 🤷♂️.

As well as a valve and a TDR I have an old SRX400. Maybe 85 MPH flat out (with my bulk on it).
It's great fun hooning about on it, flat out on unrestricted roads and refusing to slow down wherever possible, all about keeping the hard won momentum.
Somehow I've avoided speeding fines since the 80's, so no plans to get rid of the 2 strokes yet, but I know exactly what you mean, I still get carried away at times.

I had lambrettas for years. 200’s are around 12 BHP as standard. A big bore kit (225cc) a bigger carb and expansion and your looking at around 24BHP. It’s about right for the frame.
So when Banshee big bore kits, variable electronics etc started to become available I thought I’d head this way. The more I actually thought about how well a standard YPVS goes, the more I decided not to go that way.
The reason is as you state, you can’t really thrash an RD about on the roads without losing your license these days, so the extra expense seemed a waste.

I reckon knowing where to give it a short sharp burst is the secret. For me at least. Touch wood. Today I took my slabbie out for 15 minutes. Not registered. Just getting it a bit warm and get the oil flowin. Got stuck into it in first and second a few times. Great fun .

I use my CCM supermoto a lot of the time.. Still a hooligan but at more respectable speeds.. Only time I've been caught speeding on it was when the speedo died..

I have an R1 that's over 20 years old now , had it from new but it is so easy to pin it open and kick it up the box to 3 figure speeds in seconds and I don't really ride it because I cant resist the rush of doing so , and as we know you only have to go infront of a motorcycle hating magistrate and you may well get a custodial
my CR500 is a lot slower top end but wheelies easy and pc plod don't like stunting on the road
but it is hard to ride a bike with restraint 100% of the time (for me anyway)

Thankfully semi rural Australia doesn't have the same problem as the UK, big areas to cover here with not many coppers and even less speed cameras. I love getting out on the LC and giving it a good flogging! I must admit though, I'm probably not as much of a hooligan as I was 30years ago. Who really is?

but it is hard to ride a bike with restraint 100% of the time (for me anyway) That's because these bikes were designed to be thrashed and it doesn't make a lot of point to do anything else. You can ride an LC like a vicar on his way to church, but what's the point. I get just as much fun on my old classic bike, at 50mph it feels like I'm cracking on a bit and I rarely feel like I need to go faster....whereas on my LC I'm always screaming the tits off it.

I just try and pick where i ride and avoid the hotspot's locally that is,the problem is when you go further afield and you don't know the roads so well, but yes i can see your point ! Tend to do more mile's a year on me push bikes than all my rd's and car put together though !!No problem with speeding there just everyone trying to kill you ?

I’ve got an LC hybrid with LC engine, and had an F2 back in the day.
The engines seem very different from memory.
I seem to remember being able to drive with ease at any speed on a YPVS. Not quite so for the LC. As said they want to be thrashed.
Perhaps that’s part of the reason so many LC hybrids have YPVS lumps?

Go to the Isle of Mann,National speed limit is whatever you choose. As far as I know the only place on earth where you can legally ride past the old bill at 140mph+ and during TT its one way over the mountain course. Its total carnage of course but great fun. We grew up in Morecambe so for us it was just a 4 hour boat ride away..my first TT in 86 on a LC 125!!

I am with you on this one! I tend to bimble round town on my LC, hitting the power every now and then gives me the buzz I need. I also have an OW01 and I hardly use it any more, too frantic, revvy and manic. God, what has happened to me?

Your story really really annoys me.... and an example of what has gone wrong in this country, where priorities are all skewd. I live in Notts, the county council have systematically lowered 60's to 50's on rural roads for no apparent reason, then spend thousands of our council tax money putting average speed cameras in. Have they done this for my safety or your safety, no they are using our money to gather more money from what in the majority of the time are laws abiding citizens. I'm not saying be reckless, but I don't want to be nannied either.

I must be a real Muppet, I got banned for 25 years when I was 18....... wtf were you doing, killing people to be banned that long? 🤦🏻♂️ I had a race 350 YPVS that I used to stick a headlight on when I want to ride it, I had a few other bikes, But the 350 was fast, tuned, lower gearing, Fun bike, I was in town one Sunday, parked up, Getting on the bike to go home and a cop car pulls up, I stick it in gear, tear off and a cop grabs the grab bar and I pulled him up the street, I didn't know WTF was going on, Stopped, He let go, I tore off with half the cops in the country after me, f**kin bike would only do 100 flat out as it was set up for short circuit!! Long story short, Got nailed, Done for the works and the judge threw thew book at me....
Got my licence back after 10 years, Wasn't living there anyway, Moved abroad and have been since,
Oh well, Lesson learned......... I think.............

I'm no spring chicken myself and sometimes I feel as old as I actually am. But on a bike...ANY bike and I'm 18 again. For true speed cameras everywhere and plod hiding around every bend does get me a little concerned but I know my local roads and the local coppers and their mentality. I know what unmarked cars they drive and I know how many camera vans they have and exactly where they park up. An added bonus is some of the outlying lanes are amazing. There is one stretch of B road with no side turnings and a great set of bends in it that runs for about 3 miles. Zero cameras too so that's where I go for a power band feeding frenzy But as others have said I am happy to bimble about and soak up some scenery, but when I've had enough of that I know where to go for some fun!
