Hello guys I just changed some seals in my spare motor. Without top end it is quit heavy. What kind of method do you use to take a motor out? 31k ypvs How do you protect the paint? I have a hydraulic jack on wheels. But how do you take it over the frame bars? Or is it easier with a friend?

I put towels on the frame bars, stand over the bike at the seat and swing the engine out on my own, Its not too heavy to get it out,

remove as much as you can when in the frame to make it lighter ; barrels ; clutch; rotor

How do i picture this? Normal riding position. Left hand at the fly wheel right hand at the clutch case? Then put it on one framebar. With towels over the frame. And next??

i removed all the top end, clutch and flywheel before lifting out. Nice and light then. To put it back in as one unit i got the other half to assist lifting it in. Was a doddle

I always use pipe lagging too; 2015-10-04 10.13.24 by dusty miller, on Flickr I fit the engine complete - I find it easier to build and pressure test it on the bench. When ready lift down onto the floor. First lift up onto the frame rail where it can sit quite happily on the foam lagging. Then second lift gets it into position. I do find it easier to remove exhaust studs first though as they want to snag the front downtubes otherwise, and it's easier to wiggle the engine into position without them fitted, although not impossible. Leave the lagging on until your mounting bolts are all in, and don't forget the 2 vibration washers for the engine mounts ! Dusty

It is possible to do it alone but to me not worth scratching the frame or pulling my back out for the sake of 10 mins help from a mate. A pint is the going rate.

I lifted my XT500 engine out, never again lol. Tho has to be said you can do the RD/RZ engine yourself, but if you want to keep the paint nice then a friend is what you need.

Iβve just done this recently and put towels over lower frame bars I removed and refitted from the right hand side Once the engine bolts at nice and loose you can lift it slightly by pushing the cylinder head upwards This gives you just enough room to get some towels over the lower frame Beware though itβs quite heavy once itβs out for me anyway and I ripped my back out putting it back in Thank feck for tromadol lol

A friend assisting .. helps. As does more time in the Gym rather than the pub. For fear of being sterotypicical i'm from Ireland and certainly have spent more time in the pub than the gym.I'v found by drinking every second pint with my left hand has kept my biceps in great shape and can lift an engine in and out no bother..π What i use is strips of old carpet with the underside uppermost taped to the frame..I find this much stronger than the foam in case its caught by an engine or exhaust stud.. Excuse me now as i have to go to the bar as its my round..

Guinness, and lots of it, is the key here Doohanno, as you have proved. It's full of iron and makes us really strong !!(just keep an eye on the blood pressure though!! ) Dusty

I'm too big for most bikes which is a pain... But, being quite big helps with lugging engines around though.. Happy to lend a hand locally.. Reg

Got to say the early Aircooled is a whole lot harder than the later lighter lumps, plus the engine plates mean you just put it in the cradle and go from there. Iβm not a gorilla by any means but I find two step process makes it easy. First to rest it on the right hand frame bar. Then reposition and put an arm each side of the bike to lift it.
I guess the key point is can you just manage the weight, how far you can walk and carry an engine around. I donβt find that a problem but if you do then you need another set of hands.

It is out! No need for spinacheπ A little box beside the frame to put the engine on the same height is very useful.

But tbh guys being a builder I have access to the best heavy duty pipe insulation too . I also put the complete motor on a stool then straddled the bike then just picked it up and as dusty said take exhaust studs out first . But spending my life bodybuilding and lifting heavy lumps at work it was a cake walk even at 61 ππππͺπͺ
