Put about 100 miles on the newly rebuilt ’82 (4Y3) Mars Bar today...got it started yesterday....I had never rebuilt an engine to the extent of splitting cases and replacing the crank but it's worth it....maybe it's early days yet....(my rebuilt SS50 felt great too until it signaled me that I left out a circlip) but it feels incredible…..sewing machine smooth…..I guess this is what these bikes felt like off the shop floor….engine is still standard..(meaning not tuned) it has a brand new PJME crank, (w/TZ style big ends) rebore 1st o/size, rebuilt brakes, carbs, oil pump (Arrowfied of course) new clutch, chain, sprockets, tyres, baffles (came from Yambit’s: somewhat shorter than stock)..everything else inc exhausts, airbox, are good....paintwork and clocks (it was stored in the dark since 1986) are crisp and unfaded......haven’t plundered what power it may have beyond 7k yet but it pulls well and there’s zero flat spot between 4-6k which makes me realize that maybe my 81 4L0 needs the same guts transplant and then I bet it's flat spot would just…..vanish...sure it's only a wee flat spot…..but it feels so good without one.
I want to thank Dusty for the amazing rebuild threads and Arrow (oil pump rebuild), MuttsNutts (painless ball removal) Yamark (inspiration) and Jonw, Donkeychomp, Tobyjugs, midlifecrisis, Kostas and everyone on here for the entertainment, humbling support and much needed expert advice in helping me get it done....without whom etc..
and of course it should go without saying....thank you Norbo for the otherwise unobtainable spares and more importantly: for creating this space.
It really is the best forum period. Great bunch of like minded people. Great looking bike.
No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.
