So I need to do a basket strip and build, I've go about 5mm of play. I ground off the rivet heads and stripped it this afternoon, so next to order the bits. My question is what's the best way to re-join the parts, I've seen some screwed and others re-riveted. I'm guessing the rivets are pretty tough. If its a case of threading the basket, I'm happy to do that but will I need to countersink the metal plate?
Cheers, Phil

Think Yambits (sorry about that bad word) did rivet kits
I've only bolted one but it was a mitaka so was threaded with low head bolts

I've always rebuilt with a billet basket, which as Steve says, is threaded for bolts which are supplied with it. I think the steel back plate may be hardened, so countersinking may be "testing" if using diy tools, plus the back plate isn't very thick. Rivets - I've never tried fitting them but will be harder to get right than screwing a bolt in. The engineers on here will tell you how easy/hard it is to get the rivets right - a lot depends on your tools too. And the consensus is a certain amount of rotational play is normal, but an original basket will have lots of grooves from 40 odd years (nearly) of clutch operation, and filing the grooves off the basket fingers will help, but, for me, a hardened billet basket which simply screws together is the best fix Dusty

+1 for the back plate being hardened.
I countersunk mine while replacing the bracket with a Mitaka one. It was a PITA.
Ended up using a countersunk die grinding bit in a pillar drill.
Glad I did it as I don’t like the idea of those thin headed screws you get with it. That said, it’s not necessary; just me. Countless people have used them without problem.

Thanks guys, Norbo has a couple of options basket wise so I will replace the basket too, just figure how to assemble it.
